Iolani's mantra is "One Team," but it could also be "Refuse to Lose."

The five-time defending state champion, somewhat forgotten as other elite teams took the spotlight early in the season, rallied from a 12-point deficit and got a game-winning 3-point bomb by Ryan Dung with 3 seconds left to edge Kamehameha 42-41 last night at Kekuhaupio Gym.

"We refuse to lose. Last year we lost to them here on a last-second shot by Rykin (Enos)," Dung said. "This is my first game-winner and it feels real good."

Dung got help from guard Kela Marciel, who sparked a resilient defensive effort by the Raiders.

After Kamehameha extended its lead to 41-39 on a free throw by Kawika Lyons with 9.9 seconds left, Marciel took the inbounds pass and raced up the floor. he dribbled down the right side of the key and drew two defenders into the key.

"If it was open, I was gonna take it," Marciel said. "I saw Ryan open, and he's one of our best 3-point shooters."

The pass was deflected en route to Dung, forcing him to back up more than 2 feet behind the arc.

"(Kela) got stuck a little bit, so I floated to the corner," Dung said.

Kamehameha got the ball after a timeout with 1.6 seconds left, but Mitchell Kauweloa's long pass was intercepted by Iolani's Liloa Nobriga in the corner.

A boisterous crowd of about 800 saw Iolani, ranked No. 1 in the Star-Bulletin Top 10, improve to 6-1 in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play (16-6 overall). Dung finished with 15 points, including 11 in the final quarter, to pace the Raiders. Case Miyahira and Nobriga chipped in with seven apiece.

Enos led Kamehameha (3-4) with 18 points, including 16 in the first half. Kauweloa added eight points for the hard-luck, 10th-ranked Warriors.

"We're lucky to win," Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said. "We missed all our free throws down the end. Kamehameha had an excellent game plan and had us confused for a lot of the game.
