WAHINE BASKETBALL
Rainbow Wahine fumble away another road win
Hawaii let a much-needed women's basketball road win slip through its fingers last night, falling 57-56 to San Jose State at The Event Center.
Trailing by one with 10 seconds to play, Rainbow Wahine senior center Brittany Grice had an open look for what could have been the game-winning bucket, but lost the ball out of bounds with 2 seconds to go, dashing any hope of a victory.
The Spartans took advantage of 21 Wahine turnovers, and overcame a 16-point deficit with 8:28 remaining in the first half.
"We didn't play tonight as a team -- we were selfish," said Hawaii coach Jim Bolla of his squad's poor shot selection and inability to run the offense. "We gave this game away. We had a 21-9 lead. ... We're just not executing."
Pam Tambini did her best to help Hawaii's cause, picking up a double-double with a game-high 16 points and 10 rebounds. The senior, a San Jose native, also established a new career high in her homecoming with four 3-pointers. Reigning Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week Tanya Smith chipped in nine points and six boards.
The Wahine fell to 7-12 overall and dropped into a tie for last place with the Spartans in the WAC with a 1-6 mark
Hawaii's inability to hold on to comfortable leads has been a problem all season, and turnovers have been the team's downfall. This marks the fifth consecutive game in which the Rainbow Wahine turned the ball over at least 20 times.
San Jose State (2-19, 1-6) was led offensively by Natalie White, who scored 13 points. Teammates Jaime Hall and Brittany Powell also contributed with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Hawaii continues its road trip tomorrow afternoon with a matchup against the Aggies of Utah State at 4 p.m. Hawaii time.
