Brandt commits to Rainbow Wahine
Hawaii received an oral commitment from Stephanie Brandt, who intends to transfer from UC Santa Barbara to play for volleyball for the Rainbow Wahine.
Brandt, a 5-foot-9 graduate of University High in Irvine, Calif., visited the Manoa campus last weekend, according to sources familiar with the situation. As the starting setter for the Gauchos this past season, the freshman averaged 12.60 assists and led UCSB in aces (43).
Brandt led the Gauchos to a 19-12 record, 8-6 in the Big West. UCSB, one of only three teams to make all 26 NCAA tournaments, was eliminated by Brigham Young in the first round.
The 2006 UHS graduate was named her team's most valuable player all four years and was captain her final three seasons.
Oregon State no-hits Hawaii-Hilo in opener
The defending national champion Oregon State baseball team shut out Hawaii-Hilo 5-0 in the season opener for both squads. The Beavers' pitching staff was nearly perfect, as four hurlers combined to no-hit the Vulcans and strike out 11 hitters.
Mitch Canham led Oregon State at the dish with four hits and an RBI. Beavers starter Mike Stutes logged five innings and struck out seven for the win. Lars Knepper was saddled with the loss.
