Reyes saves Kaimuki's season with clutch shooting
Kaimuki coach Kelly Grant had unwavering faith that his star forward, Keone Reyes, would bail the No. 8 Bulldogs out in a tough Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East game against Kailua last night.
Turned out, he was right. Reyes hit three critical free throws in the game's final seconds, and the Bulldogs survived to win 47-42 in the Surfriders' gym.
Grant's support for the senior go-to player was admirable; Kailua was fouling, and Reyes had missed five of six foul shots over the final 3 minutes to that point. That included bricks on the front end of two 1-and-1's, as well as misses on two old-fashioned three-point plays.
But Reyes ended up scoring the team's final eight points, including his big final three free throws, and helped the Bulldogs (5-4) snap a three-game OIA East skid. He finished with a game-high 18 points and seven rebounds.
"I was thankful that our game plan was to throw the ball inside and we were actually throwing the ball in to him," Grant said. "Eventually, he was going to hit some shots. It was unfortunate that he missed (some), but we kept on going inside to him and he hit them when it counted."
It was basically a two-man show for the Bulldogs. Guard Daniel Colon added 17 points for Kaimuki, but no other Bulldog scored more than five. Kailua seemed to know where the ball was going, but wasn't able to deny Reyes possession of the ball.
Reyes, who Grant says is about a 70 percent free-throw shooter, had a sheepish grin when he was asked about the struggles at the line. He finished 6-for-12.
"I was getting frustrated, but then I knew it was going to come around, so when I come to the line I just gotta nail 'em," he said. "And I knew that (second) chance was going to be like, slim, so I knew I had to make 'em."
When he saw the second of two finally go in for a 44-42 lead with 1:12 to play, he could exhale, and he made his final two on the next Bulldogs possession to seal the game.
"That boosted (my confidence) a lot," Reyes said. "That was a booster, right there. That just let me know I could do it."
It wasn't just Reyes' personal confidence that was redeemed with his shots. Grant knew that this game could do a lot to turn around his team's season.
"I told them, 'This (is) the game,' " Grant said. "Definitely a season-saver. If we end up being tied with (Kailua) we move up because we beat them twice. This was a critical game for us."
The Surfriders (5-3) trailed nearly the whole game, but went on an 11-3 run to open the fourth quarter, aided by four Kaimuki turnovers over that span. Kailua claimed a 40-39 lead with 3 minutes, 21 seconds remaining, but forward Kelly Ellis, who led the team with 15 points, fouled out guarding Reyes at the 2:14 mark. Suddenly, Kailua's flow on offense was gone, and the Surfriders didn't manage a point for the rest of the game.
Kailua coach Tim Harrison spoke at length to his team after the game and was unavailable for comment.
Kaimuki led 24-14 at halftime, as the Surfriders shot just 20 percent (4-for-20) at the break.
