Last year: Tiger Woods won in his season debut, beating Jose Maria Olazabal with a par on the second playoff hole. Nathan Green was eliminated on the first extra hole. Woods became the first four-time winner in tournament history.

Notes: Woods takes a six-event PGA Tour winning streak into his first start of the season. The Buick endorser grew up in Cypress, 80 miles north of Torrey Pines. He'll play in the European tour's Dubai Desert Classic next week. ... John Daly won the 2004 tournament, beating Luke Donald and Chris Riley on the first hole of a playoff. Daly hit a 100-foot bunker shot to 4 inches to set up his winning birdie. ... Phil Mickelson won his hometown tournament in 1993, 2000 and 2001. He's coming off a 45th-place tie last week in his season debut in the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. ... The final two rounds will be played on the South Course, site of the 2008 U.S. Open. ... The FBR Open is next week in Scottsdale, Ariz., followed by the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Television: The Golf Channel (Friday, 1:30-4 p.m.; Saturday, 7:30-10 a.m., 1:30-5 p.m.; Sunday, 7:30-10 a.m., 2-5 p.m.).

Last year: Loren Roberts completed a two-week Hawaii sweep, holing a 9-foot eagle putt on the final hole for a two-stroke victory over Scott Simpson. Roberts, the MasterCard Championship winner the previous week, then won The ACE Group Classic to become the first Champions Tour player to open a season with three straight victories.

Notes: Irwin won the 2005 tournament to become the first player to win a PGA Tour-sanctioned event five straight times. He has six overall victories in the event. ... The tour is off next week. Play will resume Feb. 9-11 with the Allianz Championship in Boca Raton, Fla.
