KNDI shows up in radio ratings top 10
The multi-language AM station received more attention after Oahu's blackout in October
Perry and Price still dominate Oahu's airwaves on KSSK-FM 92.3 and AM 590 in the mornings, which bumps those stations -- long in the top tier of Hawaii radio -- up to No. 1 for the FM and No. 5 for the once-dominant AM in the overall Arbitron ratings.
The biggest development in the Fall 2006 radio ratings is the appearance of multiethnic radio station KNDI-AM 1270 to the list of the top 10 morning shows and among the top 16 radio stations overall.
Traditionally, stations with programming aimed at niche groups in a population garner loyal listeners, but low ratings.
KNDI got a 2.9 share of overall listening from 6 a.m. to midnight from September to December, nearly triple its 1.0 share in the Spring ratings.
Even though KNDI, like many Oahu radio stations, was unable to transmit in the blackout that followed the October earthquakes, it received added media attention in the aftermath because of its ability to communicate in many different languages.
It is among the stations that may receive help in the form of a backup generator as officials and broadcasters work to prepare for the next disaster.
A year ago this month, KRTR-FM 96.3 had the No. 2 morning show, but it has slipped to No. 5, leaving move-up room for sister-stations KINE-FM 105.1 and KCCN-FM 100.3, also owned by Georgia-based Cox Radio Inc. "Hawaiian 105" and "FM 100" moved up to Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.
KIKI-FM 93.9 also surged from No. 8 a year ago to No. 4 this time, another berth in the top tier for Texas-based Clear Channel Communications Inc., which owns the KSSK combo and four other stations in the market, including one more, KDNN-FM 98.5, in the top 10.
Twelve-plus numbers represent bragging rights for winning stations, but advertisers, ad sales executives, music programmers and other industry people look for detailed demographic information to make decisions that can make or break a station and its revenue.
