Mr. and Mrs. Dove relaxed on neighborhood power lines at sunrise in St. Louis Heights a few months ago. The couple were soon to be parents.

A fine (feathered) family
It's not always necessary to trek the globe to witness interesting things. Sometimes, all it takes is a step out the door. Photographer Ricky Oshima says the birds in his St. Louis Heights neighborhood like to congregate in his yard, where they perch on his hibiscus bushes and relax on his fence.
Over the past several months, Oshima chronicled the lives of two of his feathered friends, a dove couple that expanded their family and brought their babies to join in the daily visits. Oshima captures the family cycle of the doves, as within those short few months, the couple's nest filled with two extra members and then went empty once again.

Their two youngsters crowded the nest as Mom watched over them protectively.

Within a few months, the Dove family quickly matured. It was difficult to tell the parents from their children.

Soon, Mr. and Mrs. Dove were alone again when they made their daily visits to the Oshima garden, at left. The empty-nesters continue to visit each day.
