Aiona, Saints tip Iolani
For a second night in a row, the Crusade required arms from many sources.
Kuli'a Aiona scored 15 points on 7-for-8 shooting, and Solomona Aigamaua provided clutch play off the bench as third-ranked Saint Louis fought off second-ranked Iolani 51-48 last night at McCabe Gym.
Saint Louis got solid play from across its starting lineup and plethora of quality reserves to improve to 3-1 in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play (12-3 overall).
Aiona, one of the top defensive stoppers in the league, gave Saint Louis a much-needed offensive boost against Iolani's aggressive matchup zone.
"That's his game, the intermediate jump shot. If anything, too many kids shoot 3s," Saint Louis coach Delbert Tengan said. "We worked on it all week. (Friday) night, we knew Kamehameha would trap and leave us that shot. Tonight, we knew (Iolani) would double Scotty (Smith) down low. Instead of stepping up to the 3-point line, our guards stepped up to the free-throw line (area). We've been working with Ku on that, and Cole (Shidaki) can hit that, too."
Smith finished with nine points and eight rebounds. Aigamaua tallied eight points, including two key free throws down the stretch, and five rebounds.
Iolani (12-6), the five-time defending state champion, slipped to 2-1 in league play. Case Miyahira had 15 points and Ryan Dung tallied 14 to pace the Raiders. Liloa Nobriga finished with eight points and seven boards.
"We've got to go get ready for the next one. This is the ILH, and we've got our next game in two days," Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said.
