Turnovers kill Rainbow Wahine
RENO, Nev. » A season-high 33 turnovers is the best indicator of why the Hawaii women lost their third consecutive Western Athletic Conference basketball game last night.
The ball-hawking Nevada Wolf Pack took advantage of the turnovers to burn the Wahine with 29 points.
In a game marked by substantial offensive spurts, the Wolf Pack started and finished the contest with big ones to defeat the Rainbow Wahine 69-59 at the Lawlor Events Center.
"Even though we had a ton of turnovers, we still were in the game," said UH coach Jim Bolla. "Of the 33 turnovers, 13 were just us being careless and throwing the ball away. The other 20 were them (the Wolf Pack) doing a good job with the press and putting pressure on our wings.
"We went over this in practice (Wednesday) and again in the shootaround (yesterday) and we didn't respond to it."
The Wolf Pack scored the first 11 points of the game while the Wahine committed four consecutive turnovers.
Trailing 19-6 after 7 minutes, Hawaii countered with a 14-0 run. Saundra Cariaga scored five points and Janevia Taylor has seven including a 3-pointer just before the shot clock expired that gave UH its only lead 20-19 with 7:11 left in the first half.
But, Nevada answered with a 14-1 spurt on field goals by six different players for a 33-21 lead with 3 minutes to go.
Hawaii then outscored the Wolf Pack 10-4 the rest of the half to trail 37-31 at the break. Tanya Smith accounted for six of those points.
The Wahine (6-9 overall, 0-3 WAC) continued to creep up on the Wolf Pack in the second half. Two short jumpers by Smith and seven consecutive points from Pam Tambini plus Amber Lee's layup off a pass from Taylor tied the score at 44 7 minutes into the second half.
Brandi Fitzgerald's layup at 12:41 was equaled by Cariaga's jumper moments later.
With the score tied at 46, the Wolf Pack (8-8, 2-1) ran off 10 unanswered points en route to a 18-4 that made another UH comeback all but impossible.
In the initial spurt, Dellena Criner twice and Bre'Anna Henry and Fitzgerald scored on layups, two coming off steals.
Two follow up shots by Smith the Wahine deficit to six points (63-57) with 1:41 to play, but Nevada converted all six of its free throws down the stretch.
Smith scored a career-high 25 points and pulled down 16 rebounds.
"Tanya had a great game. She played her heart out. We have get her some help from the rest of our post people," Bolla said.
"We've just got to figure a way to get a win. We're getting there."
Tambini also scored in double figures with 14 points.
Traci Graham, who sank 4 of 5 3-pointers, led Nevada with 20 points.
Hawaii's next game is tomorrow at Fresno State.
