No. 1 Punahou still unbeaten
They're efficient and economical, and as of last night, the No. 1-ranked Punahou Buffanblu remained excellent.
Punahou shot 57 percent from the field and got a supercharged game from junior postman Kameron Steinhoff for a 51-45 win over Kamehameha before a crowd of about 700 at Kekuhaupi'o Gym.
Punahou improved to 2-0 in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play (13-2 overall). Senior guard Miah Ostrowski overcame another slow start to finish with 17 points on 6-for-12 shooting. Teammate Spencer McLachlin added 11 points, six rebounds and four blocks.
Steinhoff, a 6-foot-4 forward, shot 7-for-8 from the field and hauled down a game-high seven boards. The lanky hustler also rejected four of Punahou's 10 blocks.
"I feel like he'll get one side and I cover his backside for him," Steinhoff said. "Our team is doing strong."
Kamehameha was within 40-37 after Enos sank his third trey with 4:59 remaining in the game. Punahou answered with an 8-2 run, including a turnaround hook by McLachlin, a breakaway layup by Ostrowski, and a pair of baskets in close by Steinhoff.
That gave Punahou a 48-39 lead with 1:12 left, and Kamehameha got no closer than five the rest of the way.
"They're a good team. I've been saying it all along, and they showed it tonight," Punahou coach Dan Hale said. "In the end, Miah and Spencer stepped up for us."
McLachlin's passing skills were golden in the final quarter. His high-low passing over Kamehameha's traps gave Steinhoff the easy buckets.
"Basically, Spence and I play a two-man game," Steinhoff said.
Rykin Enos led No. 8-ranked Kamehameha (0-2 ILH, 5-9 overall) with 15 points and six assists.
"Rykin showed the player he is," Hale said of the 6-foot guard. "It was a great effort by them. We were able to survive it."
Sophomore Conrad Scheidt added 10 points, but the two leading scorers combined for 8-for-26 accuracy from the field.
As a squad, the Warriors shot 28 percent (16-for-57) against the taller, aggressive Buffanblu. Kamehameha opted to launch from long range, but made just five of 24 3-point attempts.
