Peace Center to perform marriages
The Pacific Justice and Reconciliation Center in Chinatown is offering a marriage program at its 19 N. Pauahi St. location.
Marriages will be performed by licensed officiates who are trained facilitators, mediators, ministers and judges, according to a news release.
Couples must have a marriage license from the state Department of Health.
The center, which is also known as the Peace Center, is open weekdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for walk-ins.
For all other days and times, call Dr. Haaheo Guanson at 330-3771 for an appointment.
Pre- and post-marriage counseling and other programs on peace and nonviolence training are also available.
Renowned organist at Lutheran Church
Internationally known concert organist and teacher Marilyn Mason will perform in Honolulu on Jan. 14.
She will present compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach, Dietrich Buxtehude and Johann Pachelbel in a 4 p.m. concert at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu, 1730 Punahou St.
Mason, a University of Michigan music professor, has presented concerts on every continent except Antarctica and has been recognized internationally for her work.
She presents annual music conferences at the university and leads tours to churches and locations where historic organs are played.
A recording artist, she is currently recording the complete works of Pachelbel for the Musical Heritage Society.
Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens and $8 for students under 21. Call 941-2566 for reservation information.
Artist Higgins to lead icon-painting retreat
Icon artist Damian Higgins will return to Hawaii next week to teach the ancient religious art of iconography.
The Ukrainian Catholic priest will lead a four-day "Holy Art Thou" icon-painting retreat opening at 6 p.m. Thursday.
The workshop will be sponsored by Spiritual Life Center. It will be held at Our Lady of Keaau retreat center in Waianae.
Students will learn history of spiritual practices of iconographers and the ancient techniques of icon painting, gold leafing and oiling the finished board.
The $455 cost will cover art supplies and housing and meals for three nights. A daytime commuter cost of $330 will include lunches. For registration information call the Spiritual Life Center, 523-1170.
Higgins' work is displayed at Holy Trinity Church in Kuliouou, Kahumana Community Center in Waianae and St. Clement's Episcopal Church in Makiki.
