Lishman’s 25 puts No. 4 Kalaheo back on winning track
It didn't take long for Kalaheo to reassert itself as one of the teams to beat in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East Division.
Junior guard Cheynne Lishman went off for 25 points and the host Mustangs rebounded from an Oahu Interscholastic Association opening-night loss to Moanalua on Tuesday by torching visiting Kaimuki 58-41 last night.
The No. 4 Mustangs and No. 5 Bulldogs are co-favorites to take the OIA East, but it certainly looked like Kalaheo (1-1 OIA) was hungrier and better prepared than Kaimuki (1-1 OIA) to stake its claim at the top
Lishman's play practically guaranteed Kalaheo wouldn't drop two straight. He made five of his team's seven 3-pointers, and mixed up his play by crashing for offensive rebounds and going strong to the basket.
"We didn't have any answer for him," said Kaimuki coach Kelly Grant. "We tried to pick him up every single time and he broke down our defense. He was always open, and didn't miss any shots."
After the Bulldogs jumped out to a 9-5 lead with 3 minutes to play in the first quarter, Kalaheo reserve guard Bruce Andrews hit a 12-footer and starting guard Chase Moses hit a 3-pointer to take a 12-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Grant yelled for his team to pound the ball inside at the start of the second quarter, and forward Keone Reyes responded by getting a basket in the paint and getting a fast break layup. At 15-12, it would be the last time the Bulldogs led.
Lishman hit a 3-pointer and then drew a foul on the next possession, hitting both free throws. Two minutes later, he drained another trey to cap a 12-0 run.
Kalaheo was 7-for-10 from beyond the arc, while Kaimuki was 7-for-20.
Lishman was modest about his performance.
"This was a decent game for me ... it was all right," he said with a shrug, naming two preseason games where he had played better. In the loss to Moanalua, he shot just 1-for-8 on 3-pointers, compared to 5-for-6 last night.
"My teammates, they look for me, they pretty much find me on the court," he said. "So, our shooting wouldn't have been here if it wasn't for them."
Kaimuki came out listless at halftime and took a pounding on the glass. They were outrebounded 28-15 for the game.
Guard Daniel Colon kept the Bulldogs within striking distance in the second half with some hot shooting of his own.
When the Mustangs would double-team Reyes and Beau Albrechtson in the post, he found himself with open looks from long range. He converted six 3-pointers for all of his team-high 18 points. Three of them came in the third quarter, when he helped knock the deficit down to 44-35 entering the fourth.
But then it was Lishman time.He knocked down an open 3-pointer at the start of the final quarter, bumping the lead back up to 12.
After the Mustangs forced a turnover, he took a pass in transition while a Bulldogs defender stood in his path. Lishman did a little stutter-step, freezing his man, and elevated to knock down his final long range shot with 6 minutes to play, ending all hopes of a Bulldogs rally.
