Austin leads upset of Kalaheo
He's not quite the six-million-dollar man, but Stevie Austin gave Moanalua a happy ending last night.
Austin came up with two key steals for layups during a pivotal second-half run and finished with 15 points as Moanalua upset No. 4 Kalaheo 54-48 at Moanalua's gym.
The effort by Moanalua gave first-year coach Greg Tacon his first win in OIA play after five years at Punahou.
"It's great for the kids. For me, it kind of validates what I'm trying to tell these guys," he said.
The win was a boost for Moanalua in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East race, which tipped off yesterday. Na Menehune were 7-8 in nonconference play with big wins (Iolani) and disappointing losses, particularly in their own tournament last week.
"It's very big. It gives us hope now," said Austin, who fortified Moanalua's stellar shooting at the free-throw line by shooting 7-for-8 there. Kris Lazarou added nine points, all in the fourth quarter.
As a team, Kalaheo outrebounded Moanalua 33-17. However, the Mustangs were just 13-for-24 from the foul line. Moanalua shot 15-for-20 from the line.
Kalaheo also shot 32 percent from the field (15-for-47).
"They beat us in all facets," Mustangs coach Chico Furtado said. "Stevie is a great player. When he gets off the screen and we don't stop him, he's going to the basket."
Kalaheo, which committed 17 turnovers, will host Red East co-favorite Kaimuki tomorrow.
"With this schedule, one loss is not a major deal, but if we lose to Kaimuki, we'll be climbing uphill," Furtado said. "It's the same things we struggled with in preseason, the inability to take care of the ball."
The Mustangs led 36-32 after reserve guard Bruce Andrews swished a baseline jumper shortly before the end of the third quarter.
Austin then came up with six points in a row, scoring on a give-and-go with Maurice Allen, then stealing the ball twice for breakaway layups. That gave Moanalua a 38-36 lead with 6:56 remaining.
Lazarou, a former Kalaheo student, got open against Kalaheo's man-to-man defense and drilled two treys in less than 2 minutes, and Na Menehune led 44-38 with 3:24 to play.
The Mustangs pulled within 45-42 on Tyler Caswell's follow shot with 1:45 to go, but they got no closer.
Cheynne Lishman scored a team-high 16 points for Kalaheo (10-7), but struggled against Moanalua's 2-3 matchup zone. The junior shot 5-for-17 from the field, including 1-for-8 from the 3-point arc.
Caswell, playing despite an ankle injury, finished with 13 points. Lishman and Caswell each brought down eight rebounds. Cliffton Pires had five of Kalaheo's nine blocked shots.
Allen, a 6-5 sophomore, blocked three shots.
