Entries from students sought for video contest
The TV spots aim to fight substance abuse and promote fitness
Intermediate and high school students are invited to participate in a Teen Video Awards Contest by creating public service announcements to fight drugs, underage drinking and smoking, and encourage fitness and nutrition.
The Hawaii Medical Service Association is sponsoring the contest with Sassy/G Magazine, the state Department of Education and Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
March 1 is the deadline to submit fully produced PSAs for the contest. They should not be longer than 27 seconds. Winners will be chosen based on content, impact, effectiveness, creativity and videography.
Finalists will be notified in early April and winners will be announced at an awards ceremony May 17 at Ward Consolidated Theaters. Winning videos will be broadcast on local television.
Each school that produces a winning PSA will receive funds to buy additional video equipment or software.
First-place winners in each category will be awarded $1,000; second place will receive $500; and third place, $250. The "Best of Show" PSA will receive an additional $1,000.
Information packets with rules, entry and release forms, and information on copyrights have been distributed to schools statewide. Forms must be signed and submitted with the finished PSA by the deadline. Group or individual entries will be accepted.
Contest information and entry materials are available online at www.hmsa.com and www.sassymag.com.
Laura Lott, HMSA community relations manager, said 232 entries were received last year and more are expected this year. "Feedback from teachers, parents and students has been overwhelmingly positive," she said.
