"I was in the presidential motorcade behind President Bush's limousine just as he entered Hickam Air Force Base. On the way, three motorcycle officers providing traffic control skidded off the rain-slick road and crashed. Here, the president's nurse holds officer Steve Favela, who later died of his injuries. This is not what I would call my favorite photo, but it is certainly the one I think of the most."

"The faces of these shoppers at Times Supermarket in Kahala on the day of the earthquake and blackout clearly capture the emotions of that very tedious day."

"Sometimes less is more. I often find myself going the minimalist route when composing my photographs. When I had some spare time before a court case at Honolulu District Court, I saw an interesting wall behind the Hawaiian Tel Com building that I thought might make for a photo. I waited until the right human element came walking along and made the picture, from seven stories above the street."

"The photo, taken in Lanikai looking out toward the Mokuluas, was never published, but I keep it available on my computer desktop. It is so peaceful, very soothing, such a 'Corona Moment.' When I feel stressed, I click on it and escape into the scene for a few moments, always feeling better afterward."

"I chose this photograph because it represents perhaps the most difficult scenario I have encountered in my career. It was a murder scene, and you can see a bloody handprint on the door. This photograph challenged my thinking as a photojournalist. All the while, I was asking myself how I could tell the story with taste, clarity and good judgment. The photograph we actually ran the next day was of a hacked up watermelon found at the scene -- this photograph tells the story in a more raw and bold manner."

"I chose this picture not only because it's cheerful and fun but for its ironic news value. On March 24, a 42-foot Waikiki sewer main ruptured. Nearly 48 million gallons of raw sewage was diverted into the Ala Wai Canal over the course of five days, the worst sewage spill in Honolulu's history. But I guess 'the race must go on,' because the day after the spill, nearly 20,000 rubber duckies made their way down the canal during the 19th Annual Great Hawaiian Rubber Duckie Race, a benefit for the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Hawaii. Because of the spill, the water level was extremely high, allowing me a shot of the duckies at eye level."

"A lighter moment on Election Day: By happy coincidence, a milk poster is poised perfectly over the voting booths at Royal School to create this image of a voter encouraged to be a 'crowd pleaser.' "
