WAHINE BASKETBALL
Cowgirls pull away from Wahine
Oklahoma State used a quick second-half start and a strong finish to win the Bank of Hawaii Invitational basketball game last night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Cowgirls (12-1) overcame a halftime deficit and closed with a 22-8 spurt to defeat the Rainbow Wahine 78-64 before a crowd of 393.
Hawaii had rallied to tie at 56-56 on Dita Liepkalne's jumper in the lane with 6:21 remaining. OSU answered with a driving layup by Shaunte' Smith, a 3-pointer from Danielle Green, another basket by Smith and two fast-break layups off stolen passes by Andrea Riley to pull away to 69-60 on the 13-4 run.
The Wahine, forced to foul, watched the OSU score increase another nine points while managing to score just one more field goal off their last six possessions.
The Wahine and the Cowgirls played a tight first half that saw the score tied nine times and the lead change hands six times. The biggest lead was UH's 33-29 advantage late in the half.
"We went in at the half and said we can't play any worse. We didn't get the uptempo game we wanted, but we were only down by three points," said OSU coach Kurt Budke.
"We knew Hawaii wouldn't go away. They are too well coached. But we did a better job of matching up against their shooters and we had some people make plays when we needed them."
Rashidat Sadiq scored 13 of her game-high 19 points and Green had 13 of her 17 points in the second half. Smith, who finished with 18 points, hurt UH with pull-up baseline jumpers.
The Cowgirls rode roughshod over the Wahine to start the second half with a 20-4 blitz that vaulted OSU ahead 50-37 with 14:09 remaining,
"Our biggest problem is we were not aggressive. We got pounded (points in the paint) inside 42-24," said UH coach Jim Bolla. "At the half we told the players to be ready because OSU was going to come out strong. We get the first basket and they score 10 (points). We get another basket and they score 10 again. You can't let that happen no matter who you are playing."
Wahine guard Saundra Cariaga said, "We didn't come out and play with the intensity we should have. And we should have done better with transition defense."
The Cowgirls stayed in a zone defense the whole game because Budke felt his team would draw too many fouls if he used man to man. The Wahine were successful against the zone in the first half, but didn't react well the final 20 minutes.
"We didn't recognize what was available to us," Bolla said. "I called two timeouts to tell our people not to match up with them, but we still did it. In the first timeout I told them we were just standing around, getting no help defense and no rebounding."
Down by 13 points, Taylor's 3-pointer started a comeback bid at the 13:54 mark. Two short jumpers in the lane and a 3-pointer by Cariaga cut the OSU lead to five points (52-47) with 11:47 left.
Dominique Chism and Green answered with field goals for the Cowgirls, but another Taylor trey, Cariaga's jumper and Taylor's 2-pointer at 8:25 set the stage for Liepkalne to tie the score 2 minutes later.
However, the Wahine could not sustain the rally.
Taylor finished with 17 points. Tanya Smith added 13 and Dalia Solia added 11.
Senior forward Pam Tambini left the game with 5:18 left with an injured left ankle.
San Francisco 63, Columbia 51
Shay Rollins and Dominique Carter each scored 18 points to lead the Dons (5-9) to victory in the third-place game.
The Lions (3-9) led once the entire tournament, going ahead 12-11 on Brittney Carfora's 3-pointer with 11:08 left in the first half.
The Dons responded with a 13-0 run over the next 6 1/2 minutes to take a 24-12 lead.
A layup by Punahou graduate Becky Hogue at 4:36 ended the Lions' drought, but the Dons left the court at halftime with a 34-20 lead.
Megan Griffith led a Columbia rally in the second half with 21 of her game-high 23 points, helping her team pull to within 53-48 with 2:33 to play. USF ended the threat, finishing off the game with a 10-3 run.
