UH, Hanoi University open joint study, research center
The University of Hawaii and Hanoi University officially launched a joint Inter-University Center at Hanoi University's campus in Vietnam this month, according to a UH press release.
Workshops, conferences and seminars will be held at the center. It will also provide a location for advising prospective Vietnamese students and scholars wishing to study or conduct research at any of the University of Hawaii's 10 campuses.
UH has partnered with Hanoi University since 2003, helping the Vietnamese institution to expand its English language and applied linguistics capacity. Over the last three years, nearly 70 Vietnamese English instructors have been trained, among them nine teachers from Thai Nguyen, Dalat, Nha Trang, Hue and Hanoi. Besides language training, UH academic activities in Vietnam include an executive MBA program and collaboration in the fields of tourism, nursing, public health and the treatment of HIV/AIDS.

Airport congestion likely
The state is warning travelers to plan ahead, since parking lots at the state's airports are sure to be packed this holiday weekend. State transportation officials advise departing passengers to have someone drop them off or take a taxi to the airport. At Honolulu Airport, travelers are encouraged to arrive up to 45 minutes earlier than usual to allow time to find parking and check in. A discounted valet parking service for parking stays of two days or more is also available.

Prison guards release wrong inmate
Sheriffs tracked down and returned a 41-year-old man to the Oahu Community Correctional Center yesterday after prison guards released him by mistake.
About 8:45 a.m., guards released Roy Ross, a pre-trial prisoner at OCCC awaiting his trial on charges of robbery, a gun charge, and contempt, after what may have been a confusion with another prisoner with the same last name, said Louise Kim McCoy, communication director for the state Department of Public Safety.
Officials are still investigating the incident, she said.
Guards noticed the mistake about 9:20 a.m. and notified police and sheriffs. About 1 p.m., sheriffs using Ross' prison files located him at a relative's house in Whitmore Village and returned him to the jail without incident. The correct prisoner was released at 10 a.m.

Two people went by helicopter to the hospital and one man was transported by ambulance yesterday following a single car accident at the Turtle Bay Resort at about 10:15 yesterday morning, a fire department spokesperson said.
Fire Capt. Terry Seelig said one woman and one man were transported to the hospital.
Police said a 20-year-old man with a medical condition blacked out while driving the rental car in the Turtle Bay driveway, hitting two fences and colliding with a tree. The two passengers and the driver were taken to the Queen's Medical Center in serious, but stable condition, police said.
