Silverswords dominate Central College
Mike Green led five Chaminade players in double figures with 17 points as the Silverswords defeated Central College (Iowa) 91-63 last night at McCabe Gym.
Darrell Birton added 15 points and Dan Wendt made all five of his shots and finished with 13 points as Chaminade opened up a 20-point halftime lead on its way to the victory. Zack Whiting was held to just four points, but added a game-high 15 assists.
Aloha Section PGA doles out awards
Rob Nelson, director of The Golf Academy of Hawaii, and Matt Hall of Turtle Bay received two of the top awards last Sunday at the Aloha Section PGA luncheon at the Prince Hotel.
Nelson received the Horton Smith Award, which recognizes those who improve educational opportunities for PGA pros. Hall was given the Strausbaugh Award, recognizing those who have caused dramatic improvement in employment conditions for PGA pros.
Ka'anapali's Ed Kageyama was named professional of the year and Kapalua Golf Academy's Jerry King the teacher of the year.
Player of the year awards went to Kevin Hayashi (section) and Ron Kia'aina (senior). Brenda Rego of Wailea was named assistant pro of the year.
Other awards went to Beau Yokomoto of Pearl Country Club (Junior Golf leader); Greg Nichols of Ko Olina (president's plaque); Mary Bea Porter-King (president's award); and Jay Hinazumi (distinguished service).
Merchandiser awards went to Wailea's Rusty Hathaway (resort), Oahu's Andrew Feldmann (private), and Kiahuna's Ron Castillo Jr. (public).
The sales representative award went to Lynne Chow.
Victorino to speak at Maui Baseball Expo
Maui's Shane Victorino, an outfielder with the Philadelphia Phillies, will be a guest instructor and speaker at next month's Maui Baseball Expo
The event is scheduled for Jan. 13 at Iron Maehara Baseball Stadium in Wailuku.
Among those participating in the clinic are former pros Keith and Miles Lu'uloa and Kamehameha graduate Jack Hodges, the coach at Saddleback College. Registration is $15 and limited to the first 250 players (ages 8-18).

Hawaii-Hilo loses leading scorer Martin
Hawaii-Hilo junior Michael Martin was dismissed from the basketball team yesterday for conduct detrimental to the team.
Martin, who transferred from West Los Angeles College prior to the season, was leading the team in scoring, averaging 17.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.
