Rainbow Wahine miss chance
The Hawaii Rainbow Wahine are still searching for their first tournament title of the season. They have one opportunity left after the Christmas break.
The Wahine had two chances to tie the score in the last 29 seconds, but failed to catch Tennessee-Chattanooga.
The Lady Mocs (6-4 overall, 2-0 tourney) held the lead for the last 36 minutes en route to a 65-62 win in the championship game of the Paradise Classic yesterday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Pam Tambini's 3-pointer with 1:01 remaining in the game left UH trailing by what turned out to be the final score.
UTC's Alex Anderson missed a jumpshot with 36 seconds left. Tanya Smith rebounded and UH coach Jim Bolla set up a play during a timeout. Tambini's 3-point attempt was off the mark.
"We executed the play right and got the shot we wanted, but it didn't fall," Bolla said.
But on the in-bounds play, UTC's Laura Hall kicked the ball, giving UH possession again with 13 ticks left.
"We had a complete breakdown. We wanted to skip the ball (to the far corner) for a 3-point attempt, but we ended up trying to create something," Bolla said.
Janevia Taylor's desperation 3-pointer from 21 feet missed with 3 seconds left.
"They came out ready to play and we just got out butts kicked. We think because we have a size advantage that people will lay down for us," Bolla said.
"We tried to go inside and dominate, but our post people didn't show up. So we had to adjust to their style rather than them adjusting to us.
"We can't continue to build these deficits and work our butts off to get back in the game, then run out of gas or not run the play correctly. We built this schedule to be 9-1 at this point and we are 5-5."
The Lady Mocs took an early 8-6 lead at 17:33 when Erin Ogan drilled a 3-pointer from the left corner. Brooke Hand followed with another 3 from the same spot, Anderson scored on a fast break and Shanara Hollinquest was good on two free throws for a 15-7 UTC advantage.
Chattanooga continued to increase the lead. As the 5-minute mark passed, Anderson sank two quick jumpers in the lane and, after a Dalia Solia layup, Anderson made two free throws for a 35-20 UTC lead 3:58 before the half.
A mini 6-2 run left UH trailing at intermission by 13 points, 39-26.
The Wahine shot 29 percent (9-for-31) from the field in the first 20 minutes, yet, with all the misses, scored just two points off second chances.
The Lady Mocs hit 14 of 30 from the field, a .467 percentage and scored 10 second-chance points.
"The intensity wasn't there. We started out so flat. It wasn't their defense. We had the open shots, but they just weren't falling," said Tambini, who led the Wahine with a career-high 22 points.
Hawaii very slowly closed the gap, but didn't get the deficit into single digits (54-46) until Solia hit a jumper in the lane with 7:24 to play. But the Lady Mocs were able to answer just about every Wahine basket to maintain a 6- to 8-point lead.
"In the second half we would score and go back (on defense) and they would score. We just had to stop No. 40 (Anderson) and we didn't," Tambini said. "Even with our best defense, she would throw it up in your face and make it."
Bolla said, "They got the ball into their post people and they would turn and score. We can't stop a post player no matter whether they are 5-10 or 6-3. We would score a bucket, but couldn't stop them or we fouled them."
Taylor, who scored 17 points, hit net with a free throw at the 10:33 mark of the first half that was the senior point guard's 1,000th career point.
Evansville 87, Portland State 81
The Aces (6-4, 1-1) cashed in on their proficiency at the free-throw line to win the third-place game, a matchup that wasn't decided until the final minute.
The Vikings (2-8, 0-2), who lost their fifth consecutive game, closed to within one point (80-79) on a pair of free throws by Stephisha Walton with 1:05 to play.
The Aces, who connected on 29 of 33 free-throw attempts, converted seven of eight in the final 43 seconds to hold off PSU.
Evansville had three players in double figures led by Rebekah Parker with 26 points. Shannon Novosel scored 18 and Ashley Austin had 11.
Portland State sophomore forward Kelsey Kahle paced the Vikings with career highs of 12 field goals and 33 points. She scored 15 of those points between the 9:27 and the 3:08 marks in the second half as PSU almost wiped out a 10-point deficit.
