Wahine, Lady Mocs advance
Hawaii needed 5 extra minutes to sneak past Evansville 71-68 in the first round of the Paradise Classic last night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The overtime win advanced the Rainbow Wahine into today's championship game at 3 p.m. against Tennessee-Chattanooga and ended the UH losing streak at two games.
The Aces (5-4), who play a style very similar to the Wahine but penetrate more, take on Portland State in the third-place game at 1 p.m.
Hawaii (5-4) had the last shot in regulation, but Pam Tambini's jumper from the foul line bounced twice and the ball refused to find net. Dalia Solia's attempt at a tap-in also wouldn't go.
"We had the shot at the end, were right where we wanted to be. Pam got a good look, but it didn't fall," said UH coach Jim Bolla.
"They push the ball up court well and spread you out. They shoot the ball well. After all, they are from Indiana."
Tambini made up for the miss in the extra period when her follow shot and free throw put UH up 67-64. After two Ashli Sneff free throws cut the Aces' deficit to one, Janevia Taylor fired a 3-pointer from the top of the arc for a 4-point UH lead.
Evansville only managed a layup by Aneris Sickles with 2:10 left and could not take advantage of two UH turnovers.
Taylor made one of two free throws with 15 seconds on the clock for the final score.
"I told the players going into overtime that it was a new game. We're at home and we ended regulation on a positive note," Bolla said. "We just had to settle down, play some good defense and rebound the ball. We survived this and it is good for us. We were fortunate to get the win."
The Wahine scored the first seven points of the game on a layup and baseline jumper from the left side by Brittany Grice and Tambini's 3-pointer.

The Aces rallied behind four 3-pointers, two by Sneff, to cut into the UH lead, closing to 22-21 on a hook shot in the lane by Laura Gaybrick with 6:57 to go before the half.
Sneff then scored seven of Evansville's next 11 points to help the Aces pull ahead 32-27 with 2:35 to go before the break.
The Wahine regrouped and scored the final 10 points of the half for a 37-32 lead.
Saundra Cariaga hit a jumper, Taylor started a six-point outburst with two free throws, then made a layup off a Cariaga steal at midcourt and connected on a short jumper. Solia sank the final basket of the half with 28 seconds left on a 5-foot follow-up bank shot.
The Aces slowly caught up by concentrating on their penetration game and drawing fouls in the process. Sickles' rebound and layup lifted Evansville into a 46-46 tie with 13:40 to go.
"We just needed to play smarter together and get more weak-side defense. I think we adjusted just in time," Grice said.
A field goal by Solia and two layups by Taylor off of steals returned the UH lead to six points 52-46.
UH maintained a 4- to 6-point lead until consecutive layups by Rebekah Parker at 4:30 and 3:28 cut the Wahine lead to 61-59. With 2:32 left, Parker tied the score at 61 by converting two free throws.
One foul shot by Grice gave UH the lead back at 1:55. After an Evansville miss, Taylor was fouled in the act of shooting and hit both shots for a 64-61 UH advantage with 1:08 to go.
Parker again came through with two free throws at the 1-minute mark and Robyn Jennings made one of two from the charity stripe with 26.9 seconds on the clock to tie the score at 64.

Alex Anderson scored 18 points and Brooke Hand had 16 to pilot the Lady Mocs (5-4) in the Classic's opening game.
Anderson, a 6-foot-1 junior forward, also pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season.
After 10 lead changes and five ties, the Lady Mocs took a 36-29 lead with a 9-2 run leading up to the half. Erin Ogan broke a 27-27 tie with a 3-pointer with 3:47 to go, igniting the spurt.
The Lady Mocs continued the run to break the game open and outscored the Vikings 19-3 to start the second half. Hand sparked the spurt with eight points, including a pair of treys.
The Vikings' only basket for the first 6:36 of the second half was a 3-pointer by Jenni Ritter at the 17:11 mark.
Kelsey Kahle led Portland State (2-7) with 18 points.
