HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
Ostrowski goes out a winner with West
The best move Miah Ostrowski made last night was one that had more to do with cleats and footballs than crossovers and reverse layups.
Ostrowski, an all-state hoopster for Punahou, put in his practice time on the football field and laced up his cleats perhaps for one final time. The 5-foot-9, 170 senior caught four passes for 68 yards and was named the West's offensive MVP in a 34-0 win over the East in the HUB Goodwill Senior Bowl before 3,576 fans at chilly Kunuiakea Stadium.
It was the fourth win in a row for the West squad, despite a commitment by the East to end the streak.
George Kauwalu of Waianae, who sparked a tenacious West defense, was named his squad's defensive MVP.
Farrington lineman Manusokai Tonga and defensive end Andrew Noga were awarded the East's offensive and defensive MVP trophies.
Ostrowski was one of many offensive stars for the West, but the performance may have boosted his stock. Ostrowski is coveted by Hawaii as a slotback, though his first love is basketball. His best offer so far in hoops is from Montana State.
Without him, Punahou's basketball team won the James Alegre Invitational tournament last night. He was at full attention to hear the details of the hoops win, but football was solely on his mind, at least until game's end.
"I knew my team (Punahou) would do a good job without me, (but) this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. All these guys, I read about in the paper," he said, surprised that he got an MVP trophy. "Everyone contributed."
The West's trio of talented quarterbacks amassed 293 passing yards. Bryant Moniz of Leilehua threw for 123 yards on 9-for-13 passing, while Brett Kan of Punahou tallied 121 yards on 8-for-13 accuracy. Caleb Fore of Waialua threw for 79 yards on 6-for-12 passing.
"The first thing on my mind was to have fun. I'm glad my season ended on a good note," Moniz said.
Waialua receiver Adam Foster was brilliant on short and deep routes. He caught six passes for 81 yards.
The win was a happy finale for West coach Kanani Souza, who will retire from coaching and become an athletic director at Kamehameha. He was not spared a water-cooler drenching by his players as the game ended.
"I don't know what they got me with, but they got me," he said, smartly dressed with a windbreaker.
Unlike Ostrowski, Kauwalu's high school career ended with the exhibition. The 6-foot, 210-pound linebacker now has two reminders of his prep career in full view each morning.
"I'm excited now. Now I have two trophies to put on my dresser," he said, referring to a game MVP trophy he received after a TV game against Mililani.
The nature of the game was lopsided, and frustration marked the contest for the East. Two players were ejected as the East racked up 111 penalty yards.
"This was the most physical game I ever played," Kauwalu said. "They're tough and strong."
The natural competitiveness didn't affect the West, he said.
"Coach (Souza) told us to walk away, so I did. I'm sad that my football season is over," Kauwalu said.
