RAINBOW BASKETBALL
Lions run down Wahine
LOS ANGELES » The Loyola Marymount Lions turned a 12-point halftime deficit into a 10-point victory by blitzing the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine with a 53-point second half in a nonconference basketball game last night.
The 79-69 defeat was the first for UH (4-3) in nonconference road games over the past two years.
Loyola Marymount (5-4), trailing 32-17 with 5 minutes left in the first half, outscored the Wahine 62-37 the rest of the way. Jennifer Hall's five points in the remaining minutes before intermission helped LMU reduce UH's halftime lead.
LMU committed nine turnovers early in the game, but only eight after that. By taking better care of the ball, the Lions put their penetration game in high gear. Besides scoring, they also got UH's front line in foul trouble.
"When you get more fouls (18) from your post players than points (11) then you are in trouble," UH coach Jim Bolla said.
"We talked about our post people staying in their stance and staying off them (the LMU shooters). We wanted to make them square up and shoot a jumper. But when they cut to the basket we would try to recover and foul."
UH 6-foot-4 center Brittany Grice fouled out with 17:31 to play after scoring four points. Tanya Smith, the 6-3 power forward, fouled out with 6 minutes left after scoring two points. Reserves Iwona Zagrobelna, a 6-4 center, played 23 minutes and 6-1 forward Dita Liepkalne was limited to 13 minutes, both with four fouls.
The Lions continued to take advantage of the momentum swing to outscore the Wahine 19-6 at the start of the second half. They took their first lead, 45-44, on a 3-pointer by Kavita Goss.
Hawaii battled back midway through the half to go up 50-45 on Pam Tambini's jumper, a free throw by Saundra Cariaga and Liepkalne's 3-pointer from the left corner.
Unanswered baskets by Jenna Sybesma, Amanda Patton and Hall wiped out the UH lead. The teams swapped field goals until Ashlee Dunlap completed a three-point play with 7:43 to go for a 59-58 Lions' lead that they held and expanded until the end.
Tambini's last field goal with 3:25 left pulled UH to within two points (67-65), but the Lions closed the game with a 12-4 run.
"We were still in there with 5 minutes to go, but couldn't get a rebound or point from our post people," Bolla said.
"In the first half we pushed the ball well and got a lot of second chances, but all that changed. They came out aggressive and we didn't. We're not good when we're passive."
Tambini's 20 points ties her career high. Cariaga's 16 points is a career high.
The Wahine finish the trip tomorrow with a game at Southern California.
