Hardin-Simmons' Aguilar is division's top player, again
Virginia Aguilar has been named the American Southwest Conference West Division Player of the Year for the second consecutive season on a vote by the league's volleyball head coaches.
Aguilar (Waimea '03), who led the Hardin-Simmons (Abilene, Texas) Cowgirls to their first ASC title, led the league with a .343 hitting percentage. She also was among the league leaders in service aces and blocks.
The senior middle blocker paces the 19-15 Cowgirls with 70 aces, 18 solo blocks and 121 total blocks in 125 games. She was second in kills with 381.
Aguilar, a computer science major, also was named to the All-ASC first team.
» Kaimana Lee (Seabury Hall '03 ) finished her senior season at George Washington with 936 assists (10.52 a game), 51 kills and 15 aces for the 14-12 Colonials. A co-captain, she is an international affairs and geography major with a minor in international environmental resources.
» Kaena Apana, a Nanakuli graduate and junior libero, played in all but three of East Tennessee State's 119 games. She led the 25-7 Buccaneers with 637 digs and had 20 aces. ETSU won the Atlantic Sun Conference regular-season title with a 9-0, but were upset in five games in the semifinal round of the conference tournament by Jacksonville.
» Alyssa Chang (Maryknoll '04), a junior setter/libero, played in all 124 games for Cal State East Bay. She helped the 27-9 Pioneers qualify for the NCAA Division III regionals for the ninth consecutive year by tying for the team lead in aces (60), contributing 701 assists (second) and 227 digs (fourth).
» Ashley Kim (Punahou '05), a sophomore libero, topped Columbia with 15 aces and 369 digs (4.2 per game). The pre-med major made just 31 receiving errors in 497 attempts, a .938 percentage.
» Evelyn-Rose Hata (Moanalua '06) led the Pasadena City College Lancers with 562 assists. The freshman setter also had 103 digs.
Lee becomes Menlo's top career scorer
Kepua Lee (Moanalua '04) scored 20 points in Menlo College's 68-67 win over Concordia (Texas) last Saturday to become the Oaks' (5-1) all-time leading scorer with 968 points.
A week earlier, Lee was named to the Oaks-hosted Thanksgiving Classic All-Tournament team.
» Nicole Garbin (Baldwin '01), who played soccer for four years for the Oregon Ducks and redshirted two other years with injuries, has joined the women's basketball team. She has appeared in two games for a total of 8 minutes. Garbin has one steal, one turnover and is still looking for her first point going 0-for-3 from the field and 0-for-2 from the free-throw line.
Hussey hitting .423 for Eastern Kentucky
Shyenna Hussey was written up in a recent release about the Eastern Kentucky University women's softball team called "Inside the Dugout."
Hussey, a 2006 Kailua High School graduate, made quite an impression during the Colonials' fall season when they compiled a 7-1 record.
The third baseman had a .423 batting average, eight runs batted in and a .483 on-base percentage.
"She can flat out hit," said coach Jane Worthington.
