Toros dominate boards in win over Vulcans
Shamont Brown scored 18 points to lead Cal State Dominguez Hills to an 83-51 victory over Hawaii-Hilo in Division II college basketball last night in Carson, Calif.
Rashad Bilal had 13 points and Sam Wilhoite added 11 for the Vulcans (2-7), who were outrebounded 46-29. UH-Hilo shot 30 percent from the field.
The Toros improved to 2-3.
» Israel Torres had 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead Menlo to a 53-51 win over Hawaii Pacific last night at Atherton, Calif.
Mickey Wheeler had 10 points and five rebounds for the Sea Warriors (3-3).
The Oaks improved to 3-4.
Yates to speak at Vulcans' annual dinner
Atlanta Braves pitcher Tyler Yates is the guest speaker at Hawaii-Hilo's annual Vulcan Baseball Dinner/Auction on Jan. 15 at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel.
Yates, a Kauai High alumnus, pitched for the Vulcans from 1996-98.
"UH-Hilo is so proud of Tyler and all the hard work he had to go through to become a Major League player," Vulcans coach Joey Estrella said. "To be able to play at baseball's highest level and endure the injuries he has had is a tribute to him and to his physical and mental toughness."

Menlo's Lee earns Cal Pac weekly honor
Kepua Lee, a junior guard/forward at Menlo College, was named the California Pacific Conference Player of the Week for her efforts on the road in Texas last week.
Lee (Moanalua '04) scored 45 points and pulled down 28 rebounds, including a career-high 17 on Sunday against Mary Hardin-Baylor. On Monday, she posted her second double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds in a 68-67 win over Concordia.
