Rainbow Wahine rally past Matadors
From staff and wire reports
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. » The Hawaii Rainbow Wahine rallied with their biggest second-half point total of the season to defeat Cal State Northridge 72-61 in a nonconference basketball game last night.
Trailing 39-26 at the half, the Wahine outscored an opponent in the second half for the first time this year with a 46-point effort while holding the Matadors (3-6) to 22.
Hawaii (4-2) started the second half with a 22-7 run to take their first lead (48-46) with 12:56 to play.
Tanya Smith scored eight points and the Wahine got five from Pam Tambini during the spurt.
After a couple of quick lead changes, Janevia Taylor's 3-point shot gave the Wahine the lead (56-54) for good with 9 minutes left.
It was Taylor's second 3-pointer of the second half and third for the game. That moved her past April Atuaia into fifth place on the career list with 99 treys.
"I had a feeling we would come out and play flat after a nine-day layoff. They scored 19 points off our 10 turnovers in the first half," UH coach Jim Bolla said.
"We had trouble with them changing defenses. There were times we were running a zone offense against their man and that wasn't very effective.
"At halftime I told them if we score one point a minute more than they do we can get this thing turned around. We went to a man (defense) and really kind of gutted it out."
The Matadors (3-6) closed to within three points (62-59) on a free throw by LaJoyce King with about 3 minutes remaining.
But, Taylor hit her fourth trey, Saundra Cariaga canned a 5-foot jumper and Tambini followed with a free throw and a fast-break layup to extend the UH lead to 11 points, 70-59, with time running out.
Tambini, who also had four 3-pointers, led Hawaii with 19 points. Taylor finished with 16 and Smith added 15.
King had the game's only double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds.
"It was a good win for us to play so poorly in the first half, then come out and come back in the second. It shows what we are capable of doing, but we need to do it from the beginning of the game," Bolla said.
Dating back to last year, the Wahine are 21-0 when leading with 5 minutes left in a game.
Hawaii continues the road trip with a game at Loyola Marymount tomorrow.
