Low bamboo supply affects TEMARI event
Due to lack of high-quality bamboo, TEMARI will not be offering traditional New Year's kadomatsu at its annual year-end fundraiser.
Instead, the cultural organization will be offering Year of the Boar ornaments at the Christmas Affaire event taking place 5 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii. Admission is free.
In the spirit of "making do," the staff at TEMARI will be presenting demonstrations on how to make kadomatsu, the traditional bamboo and pine Japanese New Year arrangement that is said to keep bad spirits away. Kadomatsu are often decorated with ornaments for the astrological symbol of the New Year.
Offered for sale tomorrow will be temple votive tablets of painted and papier mache boars, a basket of tiny ornaments, a fan with paper-thread-woven crane for long life, and pink-and-white chirimen fabric balls symbolizing mochi cakes for "sticking together."
