Institute at UH receives $1M gift
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Hawaii at Manoa got a $1 million endowment, its second million in about a year.
The endowment will allow the program to expand course and workshop offerings.
The Bernard Osher Foundation of San Francisco made both $1 million endowments to the UH program, one of five university-based lifelong learning programs in the county to receive unsolicited second endowments, a UH news release said.
The 10-year educational membership program, sponsored by the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, is for those 50 and older who want to learn for pleasure, connect with peers, enhance health and well-being and give back to the community.
It offers a variety of courses, life-review workshops, writing workshops, film series, performing arts events and more.
The Bernard Osher Foundation awarded the endowments on demonstrated program success, strong evidence of sustainability and increased local demand for services.
Prostitution-free zone grows
Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann signed a bill into law expanding the downtown prostitution-free zone to include Chinatown.
Prior to the new law, the zone ended at Nuuanu Avenue and Bethel Street.
The law calls for jail time or a prohibition on returning to public sidewalks at night in the zone as a condition of probation for those convicted of prostitution.

Obama jokes with Leno about prospects for 2008 campaign
BURBANK, Calif. » Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger first announced his candidacy on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno." Might Barack Obama, who is considering a run for president, do the same?
"This is a great place. Everybody who has announced here has been successful," Leno hinted to Obama, who appeared on Friday's show.
"This is true, but I have to say that I've already committed to the Food Network to announce," Obama quipped before offering his standard answer to a question that follows him everywhere he goes.
"I think that if I'm going to run, then I've got to dive in early next year, and I've got a little bit of time," Obama said.
When Leno asked whether he would consider running for vice president, Obama said: "You don't run for vice president. So I don't think about it as much."
Earlier Friday, Obama gave a speech about fighting AIDS at the Saddleback Church in Orange County. His visit was a source of dispute among evangelical leaders, with some of the most conservative saying that a politician who supports abortion rights should not have been allowed to speak at such a prominent church.
"Everybody was reporting on me going to this church," Obama told Leno. "It was like, a Democrat in church!"
