Bridge linking Hana to Kipahulu to open

WAILUKU » A temporary bridge is scheduled to be opened tomorrow, connecting Hana town to Kipahulu residents who have been isolated since an earthquake in mid-October.

A blessing of the temporary bridge that will replace the damaged Paihi Bridge is scheduled at 2 p.m., before the opening.

People will now be able to resume visiting the Kipahulu area of Haleakala National Park, including the pools at Oheo.

Maui County said the Kaapahu area of the park would remain closed, pending mitigation of the dangerous cliffs at Alelele and Kalepa.

County officials are awaiting a consultant's report Dec. 12 that will lay the groundwork for a rock scaling plan at the cliffs.

The work is expected to begin in early January, the county said.

Acquaintances rob man, 46, in his home

Police have opened a robbery case in which a man and woman allegedly robbed a 46-year-old Waimanalo man they knew.

Police said the suspects and victims know one another and are involved with drugs.

A 29-year-old Waimanalo woman approached the man in his bedroom at 5:30 a.m. Thursday, asked to use his car, then allegedly pepper-sprayed him in the eyes while he searched for his keys, police said.

A man, also 29, entered the room and allegedly hit the victim over the head with a wooden club.
