Vikings upend Vulcans in basketball
Lukas Henne scored 27 points and Steve Severin added 10 rebounds as Western Washington defeated Hawaii-Hilo 75-67 in Division II college basketball last night at Bellingham, Wash.
Michael Martin scored 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Vulcans (2-4). Western Washington improved to 5-1.
» Saint Martin's University (Lacey, Wash.) had five players in double-figures scoring, including Sade Smith with a game-high 16 points, to beat Hawaii-Hilo 85-49 in women's college basketball.
Ashley Kualii led the Vulcans (0-4) with 13 points.
UH tennis complex cited by USTA
The USTA announced yesterday that the University of Hawaii tennis complex is one of nine winners of its 25th annual USTA Facility Awards Program.
The award recognizes excellence in the construction and/or renovation of public tennis facilities throughout the country.
The complex at UH was built in 2005 and it features 12 outdoor hard courts, all with drinking fountains, on-court player seating, shade shelters and portable bleachers.
Rainbows baseball camp coming up
The University of Hawaii Rainbow Winter Baseball Camp will be held this month.
Two pitcher/catcher camps and two hitting camps are scheduled. The dates are Dec. 21-23 and Dec. 28-30. The cost is $120 per camp. For more information or to register, call 956-6247.
Vulcans sign 5 softball players
Five softball players signed national letters of intent to play for Hawaii-Hilo this week.
The signees are Baldwin High right-handed pitcher Nicole Alconcel, Kamehameha infielder/catcher Hoku Nohara, Chino (Calif.), outfielder Tessa Truong, Temescal (Calif.), outfielder Lauren Holmes, La Mirada (Calif.) and right-handed pitcher Christina Pedroza.
Two lead LPGA Q-school
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. » Angela Park shot a 5-under 67 yesterday at LPGA International for a share of the second-round lead with South Korea's Hye Jung Choi in the LPGA Tour's 90-hole final qualifying tournament.
The 18-year-old Park, from Torrance, Calif., had six birdies and a bogey on the Legends Course to match Choi at 7-under 137. The 21-year-old Choi, an LPGA Tour rookie this season, had a 70 on the Champions Course.
The top 15 after five rounds will receive exempt LPGA Tour cards and the next 35 will get conditional cards.
Maui's Shayna Miyajima shot 4-over 76 and is tied for 113th place with eight others.
