Dec. 8 services set for Bush's HPD escort
Funeral services for Honolulu police officer Steve Favela are scheduled for Dec. 8 at Borthwick Mortuary.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to noon. Services will begin at noon. A police motorcade will then go from the mortuary, past the Honolulu Police Department headquarters and to Mililani Cemetery.
Favela died Sunday from severe injuries he sustained in a motorcycle crash while escorting President Bush at Hickam Air Force Base on Nov. 21.
Flu vaccinations now available
This week has been designated National Influenza Awareness Week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to raise awareness of vaccinating against the flu beyond November. Fijian leader acts to avoid coup
SUVA, Fiji » Fiji's prime minister announced today that his government would try to avoid a coup by withdrawing legislation opposed by the military commander who has threatened to oust the government.
Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase said in a news conference broadcast nationally that the government would suspend one bill offering amnesty to some of those involved in a 2000 coup that indirectly brought Qarase to power and another that would transfer coastal ownership to indigenous Fijians.

PREL receives $500,000 grant for online training
Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL) received a major, multiyear grant of $500,000 from the
National Science Foundation to support its Regional Education Master's Online Training in Evaluation (REMOTE) program. PREL developed the master's program with the University of Hawaii for students throughout the Pacific region.
A new and complete collection of issues of the Journal of Arboriculture was donated to the University of Hawaii's Hamilton Library. The donation was part of a Hawaii Public Education Campaign on Trees, sponsored in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Arbor Day in Hawaii last year by the Aloha Arborist Association and others. The campaign was funded by the Kaulunani Urban & Community Forestry Program, state Department of Land and Natural Resources/Division of Forestry and Wildlife and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forest Service.
Mayor Mufi Hannemann awarded a $20,000 city grant to the Honolulu Theatre for Youth for its 2006-07 season. The funds will support production of at least five free community performances.
Saint Francis School received a $5,000 grant from the Alexander & Baldwin Foundation toward a new gymnasium, the Ahuna Troubadome, named after Sister Rose Annette Ahuna. Two new buildings will also be constructed next to the gym, and the clay practice court will be renovated.
"Shining Stars" runs Monday through Thursday.

Washington man ID'd as victim of fall
The Honolulu Medical Examiner's Office identified the 32-year-old man who died yesterday after falling 24 floors off the Ala Moana Hotel as Jeremy Peterson.
Peterson, from Washington state, died of multiple blunt-force injuries, a woman at the medical examiner's office said.
Police said he apparently fell while trying to jump from the 24th floor fire exit to the lanai of his room.
Acquaintances told police that before Peterson fell, he had been drinking at a bar across the street.
He was pronounced dead at 12:51 a.m.

Ex-boyfriend drives into rival, police say
Police arrested a 30-year-old Waianae man yesterday on suspicion of attempted murder after he allegedly hit his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend with his vehicle.
The victim, a 33-year-old Makaha man, was at home with his girlfriend when the suspect drove up to his house and confronted him, police said.
The two argued, and the suspect then allegedly drove his vehicle at the victim, striking him, police said.
The man suffered a broken thumb and pain to his left thigh, police said.
Police were called, and the suspect was arrested for investigation of second-degree attempted murder.

State says convict left home detention
Big Island police are searching for a 26-year-old man who escaped from home detention.
Jeremy Lee Jacober had been on home detention since Aug. 11, when he was sentenced to 120 days for a misdemeanor. He was to be monitored electronically by personnel at the Hawaii Intake Service Center of the Department of Public Safety.
Upon learning of a change in his living arrangements on Sept. 21, Intake Service Center staff ordered Jacober to report to their office immediately. He failed to do so and has not been seen or heard from since.
Jacober is 5 feet 9 inches tall, 150 pounds, and has hazel eyes and short brown hair.
