Talk covers Hawaii's role in Cook's voyages
Capt. James Cook's visits to the islands and Hawaii's significance among his voyages will be discussed in a lecture on Saturday, "Hawai'i and the Voyages that Changed the World."
Brian Richardson, University of Hawaii librarian, instructor and author, will lead the discussion, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Hamilton Library on the UH-Manoa campus, as part of the Saturday Morning Authors series.
Richardson received the Regents' Medal for Excellence in Teaching last year, and is the creator of a digital collection of Hawaiian myths and legends. He also directs the Common Book Program at Windward Community College.
His "Longitude and Empire: How Captain Cook's Voyages Changed the World" was awarded Best Doctoral Dissertation by the Western Political Science Association in 2002.

'Slippahs optional' as benefit honors Akaka
Parents and Children Together will honor U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka at its Starlight & Slippahs benefit Dec. 8 in the Monarch Room of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.
Aloha attire, with "slippahs optional," is recommended for the event, set for 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Former Miss Hawaii Cathy Foy will entertain along with J. Haalilio Heyer's Haa Trio. A Hawaiian buffet supper will be served.
Also part of the event is a silent auction, to include gift items made by members of the PACT Community Teen Center at Kuhio Park Terrace.
Tickets are $150, with tables available for $1,500, $2,500 and $5,000. Call 847-3285.
Short-film festival seeks submissions
The Unity Crayons Second Annual Short Film Festival is seeking submissions in the following categories: documentary, drama, comedy, adventure/action, reality, creative, music video and animation.
Submissions are due by Dec. 31 and should be sent to Unity Crayons Short Film Festival 2, 135 S. Kuakini St., Honolulu 96813. Include name, address, telephone number, e-mail address and submission category with the entry.
DVD and VHS formats will be accepted. All entries must be 15 minutes or shorter to qualify for the festival, to be held in late January. E-mail questions to 808scenezine@gmail.com.

PBS' bunny Buster visits the Big Island
The PBS children's show "Postcards from Buster" opens its second season with a visit to the Big Island. "Mykala, Pono & Buster's Big Hawaii Show" airs at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow on KHET/PBS.
The episode has Buster meeting an 8-year-old who has her own TV show, "Mykala's Fishing Tips." It includes footage shot on the Big Island as it covers topics such as volcanoes, Pele and the hula.
The show, aimed at kids ages 6 to 8, mixes animation with live-action documentary film to introduce diverse places, cultures and family traditions.
