Convicted sex offender is charged in another assault
A 20-year-old man still on probation for a fourth-degree sexual assault conviction three months ago was arrested and charged this week with sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl at Barnes & Noble Booksellers at Kahala Mall.
Police charged Preston-Paul L. Afong with third-degree sexual assault, and bail was set at $15,000.
Police said Afong touched the girl's left breast and whispered comments in her ear about her breasts Monday while in the bookstore.
The girl told police she was sitting in the Japanese manga section of the bookstore at about 3:45 p.m. when Afong, whom she did not know, approached her and started whispering to her and touched her breast.
Police said the girl went into the bathroom to call her mother.
Kahala Mall security located the man outside the bookstore and escorted him to the security office, where he allegedly admitted speaking to the girl in a gray top and commenting on her breasts.
Security took a photo of Afong and used it to confirm with the girl that Afong had touched her.
Police said the girl broke into tears when one of the security guards showed her the photo of Afong. The girl "immediately went into a fetal position and began crying, stating, 'Yeah that's him,'" a police affidavit said. Then she covered her face and began to cry again.
Security detained the man in the security office until police arrested him.
On Aug. 15, Afong was convicted of five counts of fourth-degree sexual assault and sentenced to 90 days in jail and one year of probation.
