Artists Of Honor
John and Poakalani Serrao were recently awarded the Duke's Waikiki Ho'okahiko Award given by the restaurant to those who exemplify the spirit of aloha.

The Serraos have designed Hawaiian quilts for more than 35 years; John has created more than 1,000 original designs, including images of Pele and an Ali'i Series honoring Hawaii's royal families.

Student takes prize
Students from Kapiolani Community College swept the third-annual Tom and Warren Matsuda Scholarship Culinary Competition.
Students from community-college culinary programs statewide were invited to compete in preparing a three-course restaurant-quality menu. Three finalists went head-to-head in a cook-off Nov. 5 at the Sub-Zero/Wolf Showroom.
First place -- a $1,000 scholarship and an opportunity to travel with chef Roy Yamaguchi to a charitable event or cooking class on the mainland -- went to Colin Sato. His menu: Truffle Kahuku Shrimp and Ewa Corn Tortellini, Tasting of Big Wave Heirloom Tomatoes and North Shore Cattle Co. Rib Eye with Vanilla-scented Molokai Sweet Potato Puree.
Sonny Acosta won second place, a $500 scholarship; Jaime Galat took third, a $250 scholarship.

Cooking demo: Chef Michael Longworth of Romano's Macaroni Grill gives a free cooking demonstration at 11 a.m. Saturday at Williams-Sonoma in Ala Moana Center, featuring Mahi Mahi with Parmesan Pesto Risotto. Call 356-8300.
