Tournament time for Hawaii players
There are 11 Hawaii players active in the NCAA Division I men's and women's soccer tournaments that are under way with first-round matches throughout the country.
» Allison Lipsher (Punahou '04) will be in the goal when the Duke Blue Devils (9-8-2) play Louisville (14-4-2) today in a regional hosted by Tennessee. The junior has played all but 45 minutes in Duke's 19 matches this season and has a 1.00 goals against average.
» Lizzy Carlson (Punahou '06), a freshman attacking midfielder, is the fourth-leading scorer for the Denver Pioneers (18-2-1) with 10 goals and five assists for 25 points. Denver plays Kentucky (14-6-3) today at Colorado.
» Erica Chong (Hilo '03) and the Long Island Blackbirds play Texas (17-3-2), the No. 1 seed in the bracket, in a first-round match today at a regional hosted by UConn. The senior midfielder has one assist in 19 matches.
» Katrina Chong (Hilo '06), Erica's sister, has come off the bench in 16 of 17 matches for the Loyola Marymount Lions (10-2-6), who meet Cal State Fullerton (11-7-2) at UCLA today. The freshman striker has scored two goals on 18 shots.
» Caycie Gusman (Kamehameha '06) played in 19 matches as a reserve for Rutgers (15-3-3). The freshman striker scored once and assisted on two goals. The Scarlet Knights open against Hartford (10-8-2) today.
» Jen Loo (Mililani '03) was a defender yesterday when the Idaho State Bengals (10-9-1) lost in double overtime 3-2 to the host and 10th-ranked Utah Utes (16-4-1) in a first-round match.
» Keith DeVey (St. Anthony '02) and the Santa Clara Broncos (12-4-4) are in their fourth consecutive tournament. The Broncos have a first-round bye and play the Creighton-Washington winner on Wednesday. The senior striker is tied for the team scoring lead with 13 points on six goals and one assist.
Daniel Phelps (Leilehua '06), a freshman defender, was in four matches for the Huskies (12-6-1). C.J. Cintas (Hawaii Prep '06) saw action in three matches as a freshman midfielder at UC Santa Barbara (12-7).
» David Gualdarama (Kamehameha '04) is playing in his third consecutive tournament with the New Mexico Lobos (13-3-3). However, this year the Lobos open on the road today at San Francisco (12-6-1). The junior midfielder has scored twice in 19 matches.
» David Semenza (Punahou '03) is the backup goalkeeper for the Brown Bears (10-4-3), who host the Adelphi Panthers (11-8-1) today. The senior has appeared in seven matches, started four and has a goals-against average of 1.78.
Four players at tournament-participating schools redshirted this year. They are Alyssa Chun (Kamehameha '06) at Santa Clara; Jeremy Wittig (Lutheran '06) at Creighton; Stephen Fung (Iolani '06) at Washington and Cameron Holm (Hawaii Baptist '06) at Southern Methodist.
