Foodbank contributors rewarded by DHL

DHL Express Hawaii is offering free shipping for a 5-pound package to anyone who brings in a donation of 20 pounds of canned goods for the Hawaii Foodbank.

Workshops scheduled for writers conference

The Twelfth Honolulu Writers Conference offers 11 workshops from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 18 at the East-West Center.

Participants may show their manuscripts to literary agents and local book publishers.

Workshops include fiction, nonfiction and children's writing; how to research, write and test recipes for cookbooks; how to self-publish; and more.

Author will speak on vegan diet benefits

Stephen Boyan, co-author of "Ecology and the Politics of Scarcity, Revisited" will speak on how changing to a vegan diet benefits the environment, at the November meeting of the Vegetarian Society of Hawaii, 7 p.m. Saturday at McCoy Pavilion, Ala Moana Beach Park.

Playwriting contest is accepting entries

Entries are being sought in the 2006 Kumu Kahua Theatre/UHM Theatre Department Playwriting Contest, which aims to bring new and exciting drama to the stage.

Entries must be postmarked no later than Jan. 2.

Prizes will be awarded in three categories:

Hawaii Prize ($600): Open to Hawaii residents and nonresidents, the play must be set in Hawaii or deal with some aspect of the Hawaii experience.

Pacific/Rim Prize ($450): Open to Hawaii residents and nonresidents, the play must be set in or deal with the Pacific islands, the Pacific Rim or the Pacific/Asian-American experience.

Resident Prize ($250): Open only to residents of Hawaii at the time of submission, the plays may be on any topic.

One prize will be offered in each category. All plays must be original and must not involve adaptation from any copyrighted source.
