Warriors' Aldrich gets invitation to the All-American Bowl
Kalani Aldrich, a two-way lineman for the Kamehameha-Hawaii Warriors, is the latest invitee to the All-American Bowl.
Aldrich will join defensive end Sam Fehoko of Farrington, offensive lineman Matthew Masifilo of Campbell and nose guard Kaniela Tuipulotu of Kahuku in the game.
Aldrich, who has given an oral commitment to BYU, is a 6-foot-6, 242-pound two-sport athlete. He turned down offers from Hawaii, New Mexico State, Oklahoma and UNLV. At the Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance combine last June, Aldrich ran the 40-yard dash in 4.9 seconds and did a vertical leap of 33 inches.
Fehoko has offers from 11 universities, including Hawaii and Oklahoma.
Thirteen schools, including Hawaii, have offered scholarships to Masifilo, a 6-2, 265-pounder.
Tuipulotu, who is 6-1 and 291 pounds, is mulling offers from five schools. Hawaii has offered, but he is leaning a bit toward Utah, where he has attended summer camps for the past three years.
Leading by example:
When it comes to senior leadership, the Iolani cross-country team knows what to do.
In fact, interim coach Grant Muroda puts a lot of trust into his hard-working team, which finished a close second to Kamehameha at the Interscholastic League of Honolulu championships last Saturday at Central Oahu Regional Park.
"They kind of self-motivate themselves. They actually wrote a lot of their own workouts," Muroda said. "It's, 'Coach, we're running to Chuck E. Cheese's.' Or, 'Coach, we're running up Wilhelmina Rise.'
"It's the last year for a lot of them, so it's the last time they might get to do these things."
Chuck E. Cheese's, located in Aina Haina, is a 9.8-mile round trip from Iolani. Wilhelmina Rise is a steep climb up a straight road in a residential area. It is not recommended for the faint of heart.
Kon Weber, one of the seniors, has enjoyed Muroda's laid-back, enthusiastic approach.
"We train hard. We've run around Diamond Head, up Tantalus to Mott-Smith (Drive)," said Weber, who won the ILH title Saturday. "Coach is very relaxed."
Weber is looking forward to the state championships. One of the favorites, Bryce Jenkins of Leilehua, finished 20 seconds ahead of Weber at the Punahou Invitational last month.
Muroda won't be surprised if Iolani, which finished second at the ILH championships, makes a serious run at states.
"ILH for us is harder. At states, everyone comes into the mix," he said. "It'll be closer than today, I think."
Mules have staying power:
Leilehua's sweep of the boys and girls titles at the Oahu Interscholastic Association cross-country championships Saturday was no matter of luck.
"They pushed each other. They did a lot of running before school, early in the morning," girls coach Lenalynn Miyamoto said. "They knew they had to work hard. There are a lot of good schools out there."
Among them was co-OIA West champion Mililani. Leilehua finished with 63 team points, five ahead of their neighbors from Central Oahu.
Another plus for the Mules was their commitment to train at Central Oahu Regional Park, where the OIA championships were held. The state meet on Friday will also be held there. The facility is 9 miles from the Leilehua campus, but the boys and girls managed to train there a few times a week for the past four weeks.
"They have bigger goals, but the coaches have been telling me that the hardest thing to do is repeat," boys coach Shawn Nakata said. "We have a really young team, but we have returnees and we're going back (to the state championships) with experience."
Leilehua finished fourth in the state meet last year.
"We have a little work to do," Nakata said, referring to perennial powers Punahou, Kamehameha and Iolani. "But if the boys work hard, we'll be in there."
Who's on first?:
A clarification is in order for football players (and families) who send videos and DVDs to prospective recruiters.
College coaches are prohibited, due to a new NCAA rule, from purchasing or accepting combine footage that is sent by an outside entity, Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance director Doris Sullivan said. PIAA hosts a combine each May at Saint Louis.
A player or his family are permitted to send combine footage, though.
Game footage is allowed to be sent from any source, Sullivan said.
