Sea Warriors' Iacovelli, Laan make region team
Hawaii Pacific's Todd Iacovelli and Brandon Laan were named to the NCAA II Men's All-West Region Cross-Country Team yesterday.
The team consists of the top-15 individual finishers at the nation's eight regional meets last weekend. Iacovelli won the 10-kilometer West Regional meet and Laan finished 10th.
Iacovelli will run in the NCAA II championships in Pensacola, Fla., next week.
Seasiders' Peters makes region volleyball team
Brigham Young-Hawaii outside hitter Tuli Peters was chosen to the Pacific Regional Volleyball All-Star first team yesterday.
Seasiders setter LeeAnn Mapu made the second team along with Hawaii-Hilo outside hitter Taina Savage and Hawaii Pacific middle blocker Barbara Martin.
Sharks outlast CaneFires in HWB
Hisashi Kawata and Ryan Patterson each drove two runs and the Honolulu Sharks beat the West Oahu CaneFires 8-6 last night at Hans L'Orange Field.
Every starter except shortstop Masaya Ozaki had a hit for the Sharks, who made a winner out of Kazumasa Kikuchi (1-2). Kikuchi threw two scoreless innings.
» Mike Carp drove in Rodney Choy Foo in the eighth inning to lead the North Shore Honu over the Waikiki Beach Boys 2-0 at Les Murakami Stadium.
Jonathan Tucker added an insurance run for North Shore with an RBI single in the ninth.
Sotoshi Yamazaki (2-1) earned the win for the Honu, with Bobby Parnell earning the save.
Hawaii falls to 11th place in Kaneohe
The Hawaii golf team fell from third to 11th place in the second round of the UH Fall Invitational golf tournament yesterday at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course.
UH's Pierre-Henri Soero is tied for 20th at 2-over 146. He's seven shots behind tourney leaders Brian Locke of Loyola Marymount and Gari Maton of Charleston.
Loyola Marymount is the team leader at 2-under 574 heading into today's final round. Hawaii is 15 shots back.
» Kellan Anderson and Troy Higashiyama shot 23-under 121 to win the Aloha Section PGA Pro-Scratch Championship yesterday at Pearl Country Club.
Patacchia makes quarterfinals in Brazil
Hawaii's Fred Patacchia beat Odirlei Coutinho 13.27 to 12.33 yesterday in the fourth round of the Nova Schin Festival surf contest in Brazil.
Patacchia will face Darren O'Rafferty in the quarterfinals today.
