Five big plays from Hawaii's 63-10 win over Utah State

Chosen and described by the
Star-Bulletin's Dave Reardon

1. Off to the races

The Setup: Hawaii 0, Utah State 0; around 13:45 remaining, first quarter, Hawaii ball, first and 10 at Utah State 29.

The Play: On the game's fifth play from scrimmage, Ryan Grice-Mullins runs a slant pattern against single coverage. The slotback catches a pass from Colt Brennan in full stride and outruns the rest of the Utah State defense.

The Impact: Utah State covered the Hawaii wide receivers well early in the game, but not the slotbacks and running backs, who account for all seven receptions in the first quarter and seven of Hawaii's nine touchdowns in the game.

Grice-Mullins: "At about the 5-yard line, I almost fumbled. I was, 'Please don't fumble at the 1.' "

2. Dig this

The Setup: Hawaii 14, Utah State 3; less than 10:30 remaining, second quarter, Hawaii ball, first and 10 at own 40.

The Play: Utah State blitzes and Hawaii has the perfect antidote with a shovel pass to Nate Ilaoa. Ilaoa cuts through the remainder of the Utah State defenders, and outruns the pursuit for a 60-yard touchdown.

The Impact: Hawaii led by 11 even before fully adjusting to Utah State's defense. It would use the shovel to Ilaoa for another 60-yard gain in the third quarter, setting up Brennan's 12-yard pass to Davone Bess for a 35-10 lead.

Ilaoa: "Just a good game plan by Coach. They're packing the box with like nine guys. So we were able to get it open and pop it a couple of times."

3. Stopping at the gap

The Setup: Hawaii 21, Utah State 3; around 6:15 remaining, second quarter, Utah State ball, second and 6 at own 48.

The Play: Antraun McDaniel, in for injured Utah State running back Marcus Cross, is forced to fumble by Hawaii defensive end Rocky Savaiigaea. Hawaii defensive end Lawrence Wilson recovers at the Utah State 48. The Warriors score two plays later on a 35-yard pass play from Brennan to Jason Rivers.

The Impact: Hawaii allowed just 3.3 yards per Utah State rush, and forced three fumbles, recovering them all and scoring TDs on the ensuing possessions. For the first time this season, UH is on the plus side overall in turnovers.

Wilson: "As always, our plan was to stop the run. It just so happened the running back came into that gap and we stopped him and got the fumble."

4. Two for the record book

The Setup: Hawaii 35, Utah State 10; 8:12 remaining, third quarter, Hawaii ball, first and 10 at Utah State 18.

The Play: One play after breaking Tim Chang's school record of consecutive passes without an interception, Brennan breaks another Chang mark by hitting Grice-Mullins for an 18-yard touchdown. It is Brennan's 39th TD pass of the season.

The Impact: Brennan's sixth touchdown pass is his season high for a game. He needs to average three touchdown passes per game the rest of the season to match David Klingler's NCAA record of 54.

Utah State coach Brent Guy: "The thing that impressed me the most from what they were a year ago is how well Colt is doing,"

5. Shaking it off

The Setup: Hawaii 42, Utah State 10; 4:41 remaining, third quarter, Hawaii ball, 4th and 11 at Utah State 32.

The Play: Brennan, under pressure from linebacker Paul Igboeli, takes too long to find a receiver and is cracked hard in his chest as he throws across the middle. Terrance Washington intercepts his first pass of the season after breaking up eight, and returns 6 yards to the Utah State 27.

The Impact: Brennan remains down for a few minutes, but does not need medical attention after he gets off the field. He returns for the next series and directs a 5-play, 86-yard drive before ending the day with 413 passing yards in three quarters.

Brennan: "I was trying to take some time ... I probably should've stepped up. The guy was able to hit me right when I threw. I just got the wind knocked out of me."
