Local Navy League council honors 3rd Marines
The Honolulu Council of the Navy League gave its 2006 American Patriot Award to the 3rd Marine Regiment at Kaneohe, recognizing those whose actions demonstrate courage, loyalty and patriotism at a black-tie dinner and ceremony.
"The 3rd Marines are most worthy recipients of this award, and an inspiration to us all," said Robert Dewitz, chairman of the American Patriot Award Dinner.
The regiment was first activated in 1942 and has been stationed at Kaneohe Bay since 1971. It has fought in World War II, including the Iwo Jima campaign, the Vietnam War, the 1991 Desert Storm war and in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The Hawaii Air National Guard's 60th anniversary dinner will be held Nov. 18 at the Sheraton-Waikiki Hotel beginning at 5:30 p.m. For more information, call 448-7034.
