Memorial honors those who died in past year
People who have died within the past year will be remembered in an interfaith service at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Francis Medical Center, 2230 Liliha St.
"A Rose for Remembrance" will be the theme of the service in the fifth floor conference room of the Weinberg Medical Pavilion. It is open to the public.
The memorial event will be conducted by the Rev. George Busto, chaplain of St. Francis Hospice; the Rev. Shoji Matsumoto, of Honpa Hongwanji Betsuin Hawaii; and the Rev. Lori Wong, of Universal Life Church. Former state Sen. W. Buddy Soares and Paul Snipes, whose wives died earlier this year, will speak. Music will be by Skylark.
The program, sponsored annually by St. Francis Hospice, is "a celebration of life, an affirmation that love never dies," said Felicia Marques-Wong of the hospice program.

Volunteer to be lauded by Jewish group
Jewish Community Services will honor Judith Goldman on Nov. 19 at its annual awards dinner.
The Jewish social services organization will applaud Goldman for volunteer work with the Hawaii Literacy program, Lanikai Elementary School, the Samaritan Counseling Center of Hawaii, Hadassah, the Congregation Sof Ma'arav and Temple Emanu-El.
Rabbi Peter Schaktman will be speaker at the banquet, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Hale Koa Hotel.

Renowned author and monk to speak here
The Rev. Thomas Keating, founder of the Centering Prayer movement, will speak in Honolulu next weekend.
His presentation at 2 p.m. Nov. 12 at Central Union Church Parish Hall, at 1660 S. Beretania St., is free and open to the public.
Keating, a Trappist monk at St. Benedict's in Snowmass, Colo., brought contemplative Christian prayer out of the monastery with the Contemplative Outreach program for people in the busy secular world. He is the author of "Open Heart, Open Mind," "Intimacy with God," and many other books. He lectures internationally and conducts retreats.
He will sign books at a reception following the lecture.
