The ‘House of Fire’ glows in Chinatown
Artists draw inspiration from the Big Island for a new exhibition
The common thread among the artists in "House of Fire -- Four Directions from the Fire Island," showing at The Exhibit Space at 1132 Bishop St., is a deep connection to nature on the Big Island. The show opens for First Friday, and a reception will commence 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
(First Friday, the ever-popular downtown/Chinatown gallery walk, runs 5 to 9 p.m. on the first Friday of each month. For a map of the First Friday area, visit any participating venue, listed on the facing page.)
Ceramists Clayton Amemeia, Fumi Bonk, Setsuko Watanabe Morinoue and sculptor Randy Takaki live in the four directions on the island and all use heat to create their work. Gallery director David Behlke, who calls Bonk "the elder statesman of ceramics on the Big Isle," says the artist lost much of her work in the recent earthquake. Some 40 pieces she was able to save were set aside for this show.

For something a little more risqué, there will be a burlesque show at the Ong King Arts Center around 10:30 p.m.

Morinoue's work reflects a strong Japanese influence due to her years of studying Japanese textiles. Takaki's sculptures "feel like you're stepping back in time," Behlke says. Amemeia's vessels are fired in an old-style traditional Japanese kiln, built into the hillside. It takes 100 hours to fire pieces, and the kiln requires constant watch. The artist and his friends take eight- to 10-hour shifts to keep the fire lit just right.
"House of Fire" continues at The Exhibit Space through Dec. 15. Regular gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays to Fridays and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Visitors receive a half-hour of free parking in the building lot. Call 599-5009.
Other First Friday events include a Fall Dance Showcase at The Hawaii State Art Museum, the Hawaii Glass Artists exhibit at The ARTS at Marks Garage, an exhibit on jujitsu at Pacific Traditions Gallery and the opening of "Tokoloshe," art by Margo Schrire, at Ong King Arts Center -- plus slam poetry, burlesque and music.
After parties will be hosted at Mercury, Ong King, thirtyninehotel, Next Door, Indigo, O'Toole's, Bar 35, Hank's and Murphy's.
