Five big plays from Hawaii's 68-10 victory over Idaho
Chosen and described by the
Star-Bulletin's Dave Reardon
1. House call
The Setup: Hawaii 0, Idaho 0; 15:00 remaining, first quarter, Idaho kicking off from own 35.
The Play: Ross Dickerson, aligned at the right hashmark, fields Tino Amancio's kickoff between the Hawaii 1 and the goal line. Momentum takes him into the end zone. Following key blocks, especially one from Timo Paepule, Dickerson accelerates toward the left, then makes a sharp cut to the sideline. He beats a final defender at around the Hawaii 40 and completes the 100-yard run untouched.
The Impact: Hawaii takes a 7-0 lead before the nation's most prolific offense even gets on the field. It is Dickerson's fourth TD in the last three games (the others were receiving), and the senior's second 100-yard kickoff return in his career; the first was in his debut game as a freshman in 2003.
Dickerson: "Everybody did their job. We got to the house, so everything was covered. I knew I was in when I noticed I didn't see anything but the end zone."
2. Converting
The Setup: Hawaii 7, Idaho 0; 6:33 remaining, first quarter, Hawaii ball, third and 1 at Idaho 10.
The Play: Jason Rivers draws man-to-man coverage and beats the cornerback running a skinny post. Before Colt Brennan throws the pass, slotback Davone Bess cuts sharply inside of and away from Rivers, taking the safety with him. Brennan's throw is on the money for his first of five touchdown passes.
The Impact: Hawaii goes 3-for-3 on third-down conversions during its first drive of the game, and 10-for-11 on the game. Rivers is game-high with 108 yards on six catches.
Idaho coach Dennis Erickson: "We get them into third down and he'd (Brennan) show up and make the play."
3. Dancing Bear
The Setup: Hawaii 28, Idaho 10; 00:30 remaining, second quarter, Hawaii ball, second and 10 at Idaho 18.
The Play: Brennan dumps off a short pass to Nate Ilaoa, who displays his rare combination of power and grace by breaking a tackle before he dances sideways along the sideline the last few yards to the end zone for his second touchdown of the game.
The Impact: Idaho could've gone into halftime energized with a stop in the last minute, but instead Hawaii makes it a 25-point game, offering little hope for the visitors. Idaho has a decent plan of limiting Hawaii to short gains, but misses too many tackles for it to be anything close to effective.
Ilaoa: "I was just trying to be as skinny as I can. I'm a lot bigger than I used to be. Anything to get the ball to the pylon area."
4. Welcome back
The Setup: Hawaii 35, Idaho 10; 11:47 remaining, third quarter; Hawaii ball, first and 10 at Idaho 34.
The Play: Brennan gets some pressure and dumps off to Ryan Grice-Mullins, who is isolated with one defender. He shows no ill effects from an ankle sprain that kept him out a month, and no one on the Idaho defense can catch him before he covers the 30 yards to the goal line.
The Impact: Grice-Mullins catches five passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns in his return to action. He has 20 receptions for 343 yards and four touchdowns in little more than three full games.
Grice-Mullins: "I knew if I got the ball in the flat it's one man to beat. After I beat him it was just stay inbounds on the sideline."
5. Knock out
The Setup: Hawaii 41, Idaho 10; 6:33 remaining, third quarter; Idaho ball, fourth and 10 at Hawaii 36.
The Play: Idaho QB Steven Wichman drops back, but quickly decides his best chance for a first down is to scramble. Strong safety Jake Patek, sitting in a deep zone, sees Wichman cross the line of scrimmage. Patek rushes forward, avoids a blocker and crashes into Wichman with a high but clean hit that puts the quarterback on his seat and knocks the ball out of his hands. UH linebacker Micah Lau recovers at Hawaii's 27.
The Impact: Patek's hit took away Idaho's last chance to make a game of it. Ian Sample scored on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Brennan four plays later, and Wichman never returned, becoming the sixth quarterback Hawaii's defense has knocked out of a game this year.
Patek: "The quarterback tried to cut outside. I changed directions and hit him and it felt great."
