Trojans turn it around, take out Govs
Mililani moves on in the OIA playoffs after destroying Farrington
The Mililani Trojans hit a low point after two early losses.
Favored to win the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West, the Trojans faced each other and decided to transform frustration into fulfillment. Mililani took its amazing comeback one step further by upsetting fifth-ranked Farrington 33-6 last night before about 2,000 at the Trojans' field.
Rustin Funakoshi threw for 146 yards and three touchdowns on 13-for-16 passing, and Jordan Torres rushed for 105 yards on 18 carries as the Trojan offense controlled the game from start to finish.
Funakoshi was nearly flawless in a new offense that took time for himself and his receivers to learn.
"It was worth the wait. Now that we're spread out, we're a double threat," he said. "(Farrington) didn't want to get beat deep, so we kept hitting the 5-yard hitches. Our O-line picked it up. They communicated more tonight."
Mililani (7-2) will face regular-season Red West winner Waianae in the semifinals next week. Farrington closed the season at 6-3.
"We were kind of in their shoes last year," Mililani coach James Millwood said of last year's sudden departure in the playoffs. "We've had a great two weeks of practice. Coach Maa (Tanuvasa) and the rest of the staff did a great job defensively."
Mililani's defense faced a great challenge in Farrington's West Coast attack. The Governors, in Elijah Filifili's second game back from a hand injury, struggled to gain 138 total yards. Their lone touchdown came in the final 2 minutes on Maeli Siliga's 83-yard kickoff return.
"We gave them different looks, different blitzes. (Linebacker) Josh Andrews played well, and we used two of our offensive guys, Jordan and Isaiah (Lawelawe) on defense," Millwood said.

The veteran coach paused to think about his team's recovery from the early trials and tribulations.
"This team has showed a lot of character. Those two early losses made us a better team," he said. "And the coaching staff did a great job."
Filifili threw for 103 yards on 7-for-23 passing and was sacked four times, including two by David Rivers. Hercules Sula finished with 44 yards rushing on eight attempts. As a team, the Govs ran for 35 yards on 20 attempts.
"We couldn't get a rhythm on offense and we had untimely mistakes, like the fumbled snap on third down," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said. "Give the credit to Mililani. They were hitting passes on offense, and we put some hits on them. Their quarterback was on tonight. We were concerned with that. They'd been throwing the ball more this year."
The Trojans opened the game with a six-play, 52-yard drive to paydirt. Pass interference and holding penalties against Farrington helped the Trojans, and Funakoshi heaved a 19-yard touchdown pass to Ikaika Payomo for a 7-0 lead with 7:39 to go in the first quarter.
The next Mililani threat came in the second quarter as Funakoshi threw under coverage to open receivers. He lofted a 12-yard touchdown pass to J.R. Rosal on a fly route to give the Trojans a 14-0 lead with 8:53 left in the second quarter.
Farrington got no deeper than the Mililani 45-yard line in the first half. The Govs went three and out to open the second half, and Mililani came back with a 10-play, 86-yard march. Mixing short passes and the running game, the Trojans kept Farrington off balance. Lawelawe raced down the left sideline, broke two tackles and scored on a 28-yard run.
The Trojans led 21-0 with 5:27 to play in the third quarter. They added another score on Funakoshi's 14-yard pass to Rivers on a post route for a 27-0 lead with a little more than 11 minutes to play in the game.
Torres added another touchdown, a 1-yard run, with 1:23 remaining.
