UH to collect electronic waste
Old computers, TVs, cell phones and other electronic waste can be e-cycled or disposed of properly at six University of Hawaii campuses statewide tomorrow. Items from individuals, not businesses, can be dropped off at UH-Manoa, Windward Community College, Leeward Community College, UH-Hilo, Kauai Community College and Maui Community College from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Since Monday the university has been collecting e-waste from UH campuses and isle schools.
Regents honor pioneer of Hawaiian studies
At a ceremony yesterday, relatives of former faculty member Abraham Pi'ianai'a accepted the University of Hawaii Regents Medal of Distinction.
The regents recognized Pi'ianai'a, who died in 2003, for helping create the Center for Hawaiian Studies at UH-Manoa and establishing the School of Hawaiian, Asian and Pacific Studies. Pi'ianai'a also chaired the Hawaiian Homes Commission and served as director of the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands and of the Public Utilities Commission.

Suspect sought in Kalihi stabbing
Police were searching yesterday for a man who allegedly stabbed another man by the Tondo Tondo Bar & Grill in Kalihi early yesterday.
The 23-year-old victim was found face down and motionless at about 2:43 a.m., police said. He was taken to a hospital and treated for a knife wound to his upper back.
Bar manager Frank Balasi said the stabbing happened across the street from the bar on Kohou Street. He said the victim ran into his bar, probably to hide, after being stabbed near his right shoulder.
Pedestrian is struck on Kapiolani Boulevard
A pedestrian was in serious but stable condition Wednesday night after being hit by a vehicle on Kapiolani Boulevard.
The accident happened at about 8:30 p.m. near 24-Hour Fitness, said Bryan Cheplic, city emergency services spokesman.
The man, who is in his mid-30s, was taken to the Queen's Medical Center.
Man is charged in assault with radio
Police charged a 40-year-old man, who broke his 39-year-old girlfriend's nose in Palolo, with second-degree assault yesterday. Bail was set at $15,000.
On Oct. 8 the Palolo woman's live-in boyfriend, Lawrence K.T. Halemano, threw a clock radio at her face, breaking her nose and causing a laceration that required stitches.
The woman reported the incident to police while receiving aid at the hospital.
Police went to the woman's house, found Halemano hiding in the garage and arrested him on suspicion of second-degree assault.
Police seek bicyclist who broke into car
Police want the public's help in finding the man who broke into a parked vehicle on Oct. 4 in the Island Nursing Home's parking structure at 1205 Alexander St.
Video cameras captured the man entering the parking structure on a bicycle at about 6:15 p.m., circling the area for 20 minutes and then breaking the window of a parked vehicle.
Nothing was taken, and the man fled on his bicycle in an unknown direction.
Police describe the man as in his 30s, tan, with brown, curly hair and a ponytail. He was wearing a T-shirt, shorts and a visor.

Candle deemed cause of fatal Kuliouou fire
The Honolulu Fire Department said yesterday that a candle caused an Oct. 15 fire that killed an elderly Kuliouou woman and caused $90,000 of damage the night of the Big Island earthquakes and islandwide power failure.
A fire investigator determined the candle was too close to combustible material, causing the fire at 254 Kuliouou Road.
Masae Kiyota, 80, died in the fire.

Boyfriend is charged with attempted murder
Christopher Lasser, 23, who allegedly attempted to kidnap his ex-girlfriend and stabbed her in his car, was charged yesterday with second-degree attempted murder and kidnapping, first-degree robbery and violation of a temporary restraining order. Bail was set at $250,000.
Police said Lasser's ex-girlfriend, 24, reported that Lasser dragged her into his vehicle on Moanalua Loop in Waimalu on Tuesday afternoon.
When she tried to escape, Lasser cut her forearm with a knife and ran off with her purse. At Kapiolani Hospital at Pali Momi, the woman was found to have a stab wound in her lower back.
The woman told police she had a temporary restraining order against Lasser since Oct. 10.
Police arrested Lasser, covered in blood, a few blocks away. He was found hiding under a car on Hekaha Street.
Man is accused of kidnapping girlfriend
Police arrested a 23-year-old man yesterday on suspicion of kidnapping his 24-year-old girlfriend in the Pearl City area on July 5.
The woman told police that an argument with her boyfriend had escalated. She reported that her boyfriend forced her into his car and held her against her will. While driving, the man struck her with a hammer and his fist, the woman told police. He later released her.

Suspicious fire destroys Hilo home
HILO » A fire of suspicious origin destroyed a vacant house being remodeled at the corner of Iolani and Kekuanaoa streets in Hilo at about 3 a.m. yesterday, Fire Department officials said.
Officials described the cause as "suspicious-incendiary." The value of the destroyed property was put at $250,000.
