Honu tie CaneFires in HWB West Division
The North Shore Honu gained a share of first place in Hawaii Winter Baseball's two-team West Division last night by beating the West Oahu CaneFires 10-9 at Hans L'Orange Field.
Both teams are 8-7.
Jose Vallejo hit a three-run homer to lead the CaneFires.
Cory Dunlap hit a three-run homer for the Honu and Lorenzo Cain added a solo shot.
Hawaii Bowl tickets available today
Tickets for the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl are available for purchase beginning today at the Aloha Stadium box office.
They may also be bought at the Stan Sheriff Center box office at the University of Hawaii, by calling 548-2695 or by logging on to the etickethawaii.com Web site.
The Hawaii Bowl is Dec. 24 at 3 p.m. at Aloha Stadium. It matches a team from the Western Athletic Conference and, this year, one from the Pac-10 if at least six teams from that conference are bowl-eligible.
Hawaii (5-2) needs to win at least two of its remaining six games to become bowl-eligible and qualify for the Hawaii Bowl for the fourth time in the game's five-year existence.
Sea Warriors romp over Chaminade in soccer
Akihide Adachi and Christian Clemente scored two goals each as Hawaii Pacific defeated Chaminade 8-1 in men's soccer yesterday at Atherton Field in Kaneohe.
Andrew Whitt, Michael King, Matt Martinez and James Gawel also scored for HPU (6-5-2, 2-3-2 Pacific West).
Hale Metzger scored for the Silverswords (0-12, 0-7), who hadn't scored in 11 previous matches.
» In a women's match at Kaneohe, Hawaii Pacific beat Chaminade 1-0 on Lauren Dignam's goal with 6 minutes left to play.
With the win, the Sea Warriors (4-7, 2-5 PacWest) broke a four-game conference losing streak. The Silverswords are 0-9-1 overall and 0-8-1 in the league.

Julie Loucks and Morghan King scored for the Argonauts (9-6-2), and Karen Weatherby had the lone goal for the Vulcans (4-10-1).

Rainbow Wahine on top at Youel Invitational
The Hawaii women's golf team shot a 3-over 291 yesterday to move into first place in the Kent Youel Invitational at Kapolei Golf Course.
UH is at 29-over 605 heading into the third round, two shots ahead of UC Irvine and first-round leader San Francisco.
The Rainbow Wahine's Carolina Perez is in third place at 4-over 148.
» Hawaii finished in 16th place in the Barona Collegiate Cup in San Diego yesterday.
UH's Cody Wolfenbarger finished tied for 31st at 1-over 217. He was 14 strokes behind tournament winner Zack Sucher (13-under 203) of Alabama-Birmingham.
UAB won the team title at 24-under 840. The Warriors ended at 24-over 888.
» Four of 14 teams survived the first two rounds of the Aloha Section PGA 4-Ball Match Play Championship yesterday at Oahu Country Club.
The defending championship team of Larry Stubblefield and Andrew Feldmann moved to the semifinals by beating David Chin and Rick Ambrose 1-up in a second-round match that went six extra holes.
The teams of Ron Castillo Jr. and Matt Pakkala, Jay Taise and Scott Bridges, and Mike Iyoki and Ron Kiaaina also made it to the semifinals.
Kai to play for U.S. women's team in Korea
Natasha Kai is one of 20 players chosen by Coach Greg Ryan for the United States women's national soccer team that will compete in the Peace Queen Cup, Oct. 28-Nov. 4, in six South Korean cities.
The U.S. team is 13-0-3 in 2006 and is unbeaten in its last 26 matches.
Kai, the former Hawaii Rainbow Wahine striker, has played in 11 matches this year and scored five goals. Used strictly as a second-half substitute, Kai is averaging 31 minutes per match.
The U.S. will play Denmark, Australia and Holland in the first round.
Pa'akaula is MAAC player of the week
Jazmin Pa'akaula (St. Joseph) was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's offensive volleyball player of the week yesterday.
The junior outside hitter for Fairfield averaged 5.0 kills, 2.5 digs and 1.0 assist per game last week while hitting .429.
She is sixth on the Stags' all-time digs list with 1,122 and ninth on the kill list with 880. The Stags (14-6, 11-0 MAAC) have not lost since returning from their Hawaii trip earlier this season.
2 junior tennis teams to play in nationals
Two teams from Hawaii will participate in the USTA Junior Team Tennis National Championships in San Diego, Friday through Monday.
Members of the Barbers Point Slamming Acers playing in the 14-and-under advanced division are Lea Astromoff, Andrea Baysa, Austen Lau, Jan Matsumoto, Tara Nilsson, Matthew Phanphengdy, Mikaiah Vea and Shane Adam Young.
Team Kailua is competing in the 18-and-under division. Team members are Jason Lum, Emile Meder, Sarah Nakaso, Marcus Pearman, Kelli Shiroma and Marie Tanaka.
