Former Pacific commander dies

PENSACOLA, Fla. » Retired Adm. Maurice Weisner, who commanded the nation's post-Vietnam War Pacific forces, died Sunday. He was 88. Weisner's family reported the death.
Weisner was commander in chief of Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force operations in the Pacific from August 1976 until his retirement in November 1979.
He took command from Adm. Noel Gyler, who saw U.S. involvement in Vietnam end.
A native of Knoxville, Tenn., Weisner attended the University of Tennessee. After retirement he was president of the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation in Pensacola in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the museum doubled its size.
