Dr. Worldster Lee, left, and his wife, Honorary French Consul Patricia Lee, joined Indru and Gulab Watumull in admiring a pyramid of Louis Vuitton luggage on display at the opening-night reception for the 2006 Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival on Thursday. The festivities began at Brasserie De Vin, then moved across the street to the Hawaii Theatre for a sold-out screening of "Babel," a dark but fascinating story about three groups of people linked by a single twist of fate. Honolulu city Prosecutor Peter Carlisle, left, helped Star-Bulletin columnist Charles Memminger show off his wares as Memminger celebrated the release of his book, "Hey Waiter, There's an Umbrella in My Drink," with a Wednesday party at Duke's in the Outrigger Waikiki. Walter Dods, left, former chairman and CEO of First Hawaiian Bank, chatted with island artists Timothy P. Ojile and Mark Kadota at the opening of the 10th Anniversary Exhibition of the Contemporary Museum at First Hawaiian Center on Oct. 12. Dods' support ensured that gallery space was included when the bank's headquarters was designed in the early 1990s. Ojile's work was part of the inaugural exhibition in 1996. CLICK FOR LARGE

Fashion designer/artist Takeo was guest of honor at a reception introducing "Shibui," his new exhibition at the Louis Pohl Gallery, on Thursday. Desiree Mitsunaga, left, joined Virginia Ching and Shellie Houda in congratulating him. Takeo translates the Japanese concept of "shibui" as "subtle and deeply moving beauty," and also as a lifestyle of "quiet contentment with simple things in search of the essence of the good life."
