Passenger, 18, dies as car slams into pole
An 18-year-old Waialua man died and two other teens were injured in a single-car accident early yesterday morning near Dillingham Airfield.
Police said that at about 2:40 a.m., a 1991 Acura Integra was headed toward Kaena Point on Farrington Highway in Mokuleia when it veered across the center line near Hoomana Place. The car hit a pole and fence on the mauka side of the highway before stopping inside Dillingham Airfield.
Bobby Gouveia, the front-seat passenger,* died at the scene.
Paramedics took an 18-year-old Waialua man and a 17-year-old Haleiwa boy to the Queen's Medical Center in serious condition, said Bryan Cheplic, city emergency services spokesman.
A spokeswoman at Queen's said last night that the 18-year-old man later improved to stable condition. She could not give an update on the condition of the 17-year-old because he is a minor.
Speed and alcohol were factors in the crash, police said. None of the occupants had seat belts on, and the car did not have airbags, police said.
This was the 77th fatality on Oahu, compared with 61 at the same time last year.
Truck hits pedestrian on Wahiawa roadway
A 27-year-old man from Ewa Beach was in critical condition last night after being struck by a truck in Wahiawa.
The accident happened at about 12:15 p.m. at the intersection of Kamehameha Highway and Kipapa Street, police said. A 56-year-old woman from Mililani was driving a black 2006 Nissan pickup when she struck the pedestrian as he crossed the street after getting off a bus, according to police.
The victim, who received major head injuries, was not in a crosswalk.
The man was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city's emergency services.

Kitchen fire guts home and injures resident
An unattended cooking fire caused $300,000 in damage yesterday to a single-family home in Kaneohe and minor injuries to a resident.
The blaze started in the kitchen of 45-437 Puahuula Place at about 11:47 a.m., when a woman in her 70s left food cooking on the stove, said Capt. Terry Seelig, of the Honolulu Fire Department.
Seven fire companies responded to the blaze, which was put out by 12:10 p.m., Seelig said.
The woman escaped with minor burns to her arms and hands. Neighbors tried to extinguish the fire with garden hoses. The woman, her daughter and a son-in-law, who were not home at the time, are temporarily staying with relatives. Four dogs are staying with neighbors, Seelig said.
"It could be a warning to people to not leave the kitchen when you're cooking even if it's a short period of time," Seelig said.
The house suffered substantial damage and will likely be torn down, he said.
