Kapolei gets its first playoff victory
As a reward for their landmark win last night, the Kapolei Hurricanes can look forward to a trip to the North Shore next weekend.
The Hurricanes earned their first postseason win as a Division I program with a 35-14 rout of Kailua in the first round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference playoffs last night at Mililani.
With the win, Kapolei (4-5) advances to face defending Division I state champion and OIA Red East top seed Kahuku in the quarterfinals on Saturday at the Red Raiders' field.
"It's another steppingstone for our program," Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez said. "We got eliminated the last two years in Division I, so we're happy we were able to move on and finally get past the first round.
"(Kahuku is) the toughest place to play on this whole island and I think in the long run it's going to help our program, because if you can play Kahuku at Kahuku you can play anybody anywhere."
Kapolei quarterback Mason Koa played a major role in the Hurricanes' berth in the OIA Red quarterfinals. The junior ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more as Kapolei built a 35-0 lead early in the third quarter.
Koa deftly operated Kapolei's spread option attack to rush for a game-high 90 yards and completed nine of 11 passes for 133 yards.
Hernandez said Koa's performance brought back memories of former Kapolei quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada.
"It's something we feel works in our favor -- you put your best player at quarterback and you run the option with him," Hernandez said. "That's been our trademark."
Kailua, which finished fifth in the OIA Red East, ends its season at 4-5.
"We were never in this game," Kailua coach Gary Rosolowich said. "We just came out flat as a pancake and never rose up, that's the bottom line. It was an up-and-down season, this was a down.
"You have to give credit to Kapolei. They came out, they were prepared, they were ready to play and we weren't."
Kapolei was actually in playoff mode a week early, as the Hurricanes needed a win over OIA Red West champion Waianae in the final week of the regular season just to qualify for the postseason. They pulled off the 17-13 upset and built on their momentum with last night's win.
"They were both playoff games," Koa said. "Last week we had to win to stay in it and today we had to win again to stay in the playoffs."
Said Hernandez: "I like this team. I felt they had the potential to make some noise around playoff time and they've done it. I'm pleased and hopefully this it will continue."
Kapolei took control by scoring on four consecutive possessions in the first half to take a 28-0 lead into halftime.
Koa ran for two touchdowns and completed a 12-yard scoring pass to Curtis Kiyabu. Kamuela Foki accounted for a touchdown with a 1-yard dive in the second quarter.
Kapolei had a 41-yard run by Koa called back due to a holding penalty on its opening possession, which eventually stalled. After the defense stopped Kailua on downs, Koa took off on a 60-yard keeper around the left side to the Surfriders' 3 and scored one play later.
The Hurricanes then scored on a four-play drive with Koa rolling to the right and hitting Kiyabu near the sideline for a 14-0 lead.
After Foki's score, Kailua fumbled on the ensuing kickoff and Kapolei's Clarence Laurita recovered at the Surfriders' 14. Koa then broke loose for the touchdown on the next play.
Koa passed for 97 yards and rushed for 94 more in the first half, while Kailua managed 94 yards in total offense before the break.
"Without my line I would have nothing," Koa said.
Koa added to his passing statistics on Kapolei's first drive the third quarter, rolling to his right and hitting Caleb Spencer for a 30-yard gain. Koa and Spencer later connected on a 5-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 35-0 and put the OIA's mercy rule into effect.
Kailua halted the running clock with Keelen Gonda's 1-yard touchdown run with 7:19 left in the game and added another score with a 33-yard TD pass from Zachary Akamine to Darren Sugimoto.
