BeachBoys beat Honu in 10 innings
Mike Carp singled in the top of the 10th inning and David Quinowski put out a fire in the bottom of the frame as the Waikiki BeachBoys downed the North Shore Honu 6-3 in Hawaii Winter Baseball last night at Hans L'Orange park.
» Yasushi Iihara drove in a pair of runs as the West Oahu CaneFires dropped the Honolulu Sharks 3-2 at Les Murakami Stadium.
Ibera wins judo gold
Fifteen-year-old Taylor Ibera of Honolulu was the youngest champion of the opening day of the U.S. Open Judo Championships Friday in Miami.
It was the first senior title for Ibera, representing Hawaii Tenri, and it came in her first international competition. She took gold in the 44kg division, with victories over eventual bronze medalist Alexa Liddie of the U.S. and Elena Zaitseva of Mexico.
In the women's heavyweight division, Honolulu's Melinda Swanson, also of Hawaii Tenri, shared fifth after losing in the bronze-medal match to Ohio's Lorey Edwards.
Yesterday, Swanson lost in the bronze-medal match in the women's open division to Colorado's Heidi Moore, sharing fifth.
Chaminade beats Notre Dame de Namur
Evelyn Bluthenthal put down 17 kills and Trina Kauliakamoa added 15 as the Chaminade women's volleyball team swept Notre Dame de Namur 30-26, 30-23, 30-22 on the road at Belmont, Calif., yesterday.
Seasiders, Vulcans run to titles
Hawaii Pacific runners swept both races but fell short of team titles yesterday at the PacWest cross-country championships at Hilo.
Todd Iacovelli of HPU won the men's race by more than a minute over teammate Brandon Laan and Inga Buerger took the women's title by 40 seconds over Amanda Whittford of BYUH. Iacovelli covered his 8k race in 25 minutes, 6 seconds while Buerger ran her 6 kilometers in 24:56.
BYUH placed five runners in the top 11 spots to take the men's team title by five points over UH-Hilo. The Vulcans won the women's race, though, scoring 35 points to BYUH's 39.
Hamilton falls short in surf contest
Bethany Hamilton of Kauai fell just short in her bid for gold at the ISA World Surfing games yesterday, finishing in third place in the sixth round of the repercharge.
Hamilton was eliminated when Australia's Jessi Miley-Dyer's 13.33 and Nichola Atherton's 12.17 bested her 9.40 points. Hawaii's Lani Hunter also fell in the sixth round of the repercharge, scoring 9.66 points to finish last in her heat.
Hawaii's Gavin Gillette made it all the way to the ninth round of the repercharge in the men's open contest before scoring 6.6 points and finish last in his heat.
» Four local surfers are still alive after the fifth round of the O'Neil Cold Water Classic yesterday in Santa Cruz, Calif.
Roy Powers and Dusty Payne each won their heats to advance to the quarterfinals, and are joined by Ian Walsh and Jesse Merle-Jones, who advanced with second-place finishes.
Fujikawa wins golf event at OCC
Tadd Fujikawa made five birdies and finished with a final round 3-under par 68 to edge Kevin Shimomura by one shot to win the Oahu Country Club Men's Invitational yesterday.
Shimomura bogeyed two of the final three holes and shot 74. Alvin Okada shot even par for the tournament and finished third. Craig Uyehara and Sean Maekawa round out the top five.
Lone Wahine still alive
Hawaii's Sabita Walkup defeated Pepperdine's Anete Bandere 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals of the Wilson/ITA West Region Championships yesterday in San Diego, Calif.
Walkup, the only remaining Wahine left in the tournament, is seeded 20th in the tournament, and will play the winner between UCLA's Anna Victoria Lind and UCSB's Marta Simic.
Seasiders steamroll Vulcans
The BYU-Hawaii women's soccer team scored four goals in a 10-minute span in the second half to defeat UH-Hilo 5-1 yesterday in Laie.
Karen Weatherby scored her 11th goal of the season early in the second half to tie the score 1-1 before the Seasiders broke away for the win.
» The UH-Hilo men's soccer team didn't fare much better as they were shutout by BYU-Hawaii 2-0 yesterday.
Mayor Hannemann to speak at QB Club
Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann headlines tomorrow's list of speakers at the Honolulu Quarterback Club weekly luncheon at noon at the Pagoda Hotel.
Also speaking will be UH assistant football coach Ron Lee, Lenn Sakata, manager of the Waikiki BeachBoys, and Delbert Tengan, head coach of the No. 1-ranked Saint Louis high school football team.
